Verify your credentials meet Maine licensing requirements
Maine requires international nursing graduates to have their credentials evaluated through CGFNS or an equivalent body before the state board will process your RN license application. Start this process early since evaluation timelines can stretch your job search significantly.
Target MaineHealth's high-volume units first
MaineHealth consistently posts openings in acute care, med-surg, and critical care. Applying to these high-demand units puts you in front of hiring managers who are already accustomed to sponsoring international nurses and moving quickly on qualified candidates.
Search MaineHealth nursing roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter nursing openings at MaineHealth by visa type before you apply. Seeing which sponsorship categories are active for current postings saves you from applying to roles where sponsorship isn't on the table.
Clarify sponsorship timing in your first recruiter conversation
Ask MaineHealth's recruiter upfront whether the role supports H-1B filing before or after your start date. Some healthcare employers initiate the LCA with the DOL only after an offer is accepted, which affects how you plan around OPT or grace period deadlines.
Prepare for NCLEX-RN before your visa status becomes urgent
MaineHealth won't move forward on sponsorship without an active Maine RN license. If you're on F-1 OPT, sitting for the NCLEX while you still have buffer time prevents your visa clock from running while you wait on exam results.
Understand how TN status works for Canadian nurses
Canadian RNs can enter under TN status without an employer petition or USCIS approval, but the role must qualify as a registered nurse under USMCA definitions. MaineHealth's HR team should confirm the job title maps correctly before you cross the border.

Find Nursing at MaineHealth JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does MaineHealth sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, MaineHealth sponsors H-1B visas for nursing roles. Because the H-1B requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, the role typically needs to involve specialized clinical practice or a setting where a bachelor's degree in nursing is a standard requirement. Confirm with MaineHealth's HR team that your specific unit and job title meet that threshold before assuming sponsorship is automatic.
Which visa types does MaineHealth use for Nursing roles?
MaineHealth supports several pathways for international nurses, including H-1B, TN for Canadian nationals, J-1 for exchange visitors, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students completing nursing programs. The right pathway depends on your nationality, education background, and how far along you are in the licensing process. Each has different employer obligations and filing timelines, so clarify which one applies to your situation early in the hiring process.
What qualifications does MaineHealth expect for sponsored Nursing positions?
MaineHealth typically expects candidates to hold a valid Maine RN license or be actively pursuing one, have completed an accredited nursing program, and in many cases hold or be working toward a BSN. Specialty units such as ICU or labor and delivery may require additional certifications. International graduates should have a CGFNS credential evaluation on file, as MaineHealth and the Maine State Board of Nursing will both need to verify your educational equivalency.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at MaineHealth?
You can browse and apply for MaineHealth nursing roles directly through their careers portal, or use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by visa sponsorship type so you only spend time on roles where sponsorship is confirmed. When you apply, be upfront about your visa status and timeline in your cover materials. MaineHealth recruiters in healthcare are experienced with international candidates, so being clear about your situation from the start speeds up the conversation.
How do I plan my timeline around MaineHealth's H-1B sponsorship process?
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with USCIS opening registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, map your OPT expiration against that cycle carefully. MaineHealth will need time to file the Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS submission, so initiate the sponsorship conversation with HR at least three to four months before your intended filing window.
