Job Summary
The Intervention Teacher provides Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III small-group instruction and targeted interventions for students experiencing challenges in reading, writing, and mathematics. The focus of this role remains flexible and responsive to the school’s data-driven priorities and identified student needs. As a member of the school’s intervention team, the Intervention Teacher collaborates closely with Reading Specialists, classroom teachers, and school leadership to design and implement strategic literacy and math supports. This position also partners with teachers to strengthen differentiated instruction, promote effective use of student data to guide instructional decisions, and support evidence-based practices that accelerate student achievement.
Requisite Education And Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Elementary Education, or eligibility to obtain appropriate licensure.
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred; experience providing instruction in an intervention or small-group setting strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of a diverse student population.
- Knowledge of curriculum and instructional practices aligned with VDOE-approved programs, including experience delivering targeted instruction in small-group settings.
- Demonstrated expertise in administering and interpreting a variety of formative and summative assessments and using data to drive instructional planning and decision-making.
- Evidence of active participation in school-based committees and collaborative teams.

- Provides intervention services to students who demonstrate substantial deficiencies based on their individual performance on the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments or the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) early literacy screener.
- Support classroom teachers in Tier I and Tier II literacy and math instruction to enhance instructional practices and student outcomes.
- Collaborate with school and division programs (e.g., ESOL, SPED, Gifted) to support literacy and math instruction across all student groups, ensuring equitable access to high quality education.
- Demonstrates current and comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with science-based reading research to include oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing and math instruction to improve student conceptual understanding.
- Understands the nature of differentiated instruction and applies this knowledge during intervention instruction.
- Utilizes literacy screening assessments and multiple diagnostic assessments to determine reading and math skill deficiencies and make intervention decisions.
- Monitors student achievement using progress monitoring assessments and modifies interventions as needed.
- Collaborates with the reading specialist and parents to develop and monitor student reading plans and create strong school-home partnerships.
- Maintains accurate and current documentation of students’ intervention services.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Collaborates with members of the Intervention Team and assists with intervention decisions and review of the school’s Tier II and Tier III caseloads.
- Attends and participates in professional learning to improve and maintain knowledge of evidence-based literacy instructional practices and science-based reading research.
- Utilizes appropriate technology for instruction and data reporting.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
