Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Instructor roles at Marquette must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B eligibility. Confirm your degree field directly matches the discipline you're teaching, not just broadly related, since USCIS scrutinizes instructional roles in humanities and interdisciplinary fields more closely than STEM positions.
Target departments with active hiring cycles
Marquette posts Instructor openings year-round, but department-level searches often close fast. Monitor the Provost and individual college pages separately, since faculty postings don't always surface through the central HR portal until late in the search process.
Time your application around Marquette's academic calendar
Instructor contracts typically start in August or January. For H-1B transfers or new cap-exempt filings, USCIS premium processing takes around 15 business days, so work backwards from your intended start date to build in enough filing time with Marquette's international office.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring Instructor roles
Not every Instructor posting at a sponsoring university is open to international candidates. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Instructor roles at Marquette University where visa sponsorship has been confirmed, so you spend time on applications that are actually viable.
Prepare documentation for TN or F-1 OPT alternatives
If you're Canadian or Mexican, a TN visa can cover Instructor roles in qualifying fields like mathematics or computer science without an H-1B. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT end date against Marquette's semester start to avoid a gap in work authorization before the I-129 is filed.

Find Instructor at Marquette University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Marquette University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Marquette University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor positions. As a nonprofit university, Marquette is a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without being subject to the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage for candidates who missed the cap or need to start on a specific date tied to the academic semester.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Marquette University?
Applications go through Marquette's online HR portal, where each Instructor posting lists required materials, typically a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and references. Individual colleges such as the College of Arts and Sciences or the Opus College of Business manage their own faculty searches, so check both the central careers page and department websites. Positions fill quickly once shortlists form, so applying early in the posting window matters.
Which visa types does Marquette University commonly use for Instructor roles?
Marquette uses H-1B most frequently for Instructor positions, given its cap-exempt status as a university. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying instructional fields. F-1 OPT and CPT can bridge the gap while a longer-term petition is pending. For permanent residence, Marquette has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 petitions through the PERM labor certification process for instructional staff in certain departments.
What qualifications does Marquette University expect for Instructor roles?
Most Instructor postings require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant field, though doctoral candidates or holders of terminal degrees are preferred for positions tied to a specific academic department. Teaching experience at the college level, evidence of scholarly or professional activity, and familiarity with the Jesuit educational mission are commonly cited in postings. Specialized certifications or industry credentials strengthen applications in professional programs like nursing, engineering, and business.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Marquette Instructor position?
For H-1B transfers from another cap-exempt employer, USCIS standard processing runs two to four months, with premium processing available in around 15 business days. PERM labor certification through DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed. Plan visa timelines around Marquette's semester start dates and build in buffer time. Browsing open Instructor roles with confirmed sponsorship on Migrate Mate can help you identify positions where the timeline aligns with your current status.
