This position serves as both a faculty member in the Chemistry program and as the College’s Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO). The role contributes to Maryville College’s academic mission through excellence in teaching while also coordinating institutional chemical safety practices and regulatory compliance related to the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials used in laboratories, studios, and other campus operations.
SUMMARY
Maryville College invites applications for a full-time Lecturer of Chemistry and Chemical Hygiene Officer. This hybrid faculty role combines teaching responsibilities with institutional oversight of chemical safety and laboratory compliance. Teaching responsibilities represent approximately 60% of the position and include instruction in introductory and general chemistry courses, including lecture and laboratory components.
Chemical Hygiene Officer responsibilities represent approximately 40% of the position and include maintaining the College’s Chemical Hygiene Plan, coordinating hazardous waste management and chemical safety practices, providing safety training, and supporting institutional compliance with applicable environmental and laboratory safety regulations.
Education and Experience required to ensure success in this position:
Education required
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field.
Experience required
- Experience teaching chemistry at the high school or undergraduate level, particularly introductory or general chemistry.

Specialized Program or Compliance Responsibilities: (40%)
- Ensure the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) is reviewed annually and updated as needed to maintain compliance with current legal requirements and ensure employees have access to the CHP.
- Work with administrators and employees to refine and implement chemical hygiene policies and practices.
- Acquire equipment needed for safe handling, storage, disposal of chemicals, and spill response.
- Provide safety training regarding the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals to faculty, staff, and students.
- Perform annual inspections to ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals used in laboratories, fine arts studios, Facilities, and other campus locations.
- Coordinate the campus-wide disposal program for hazardous chemical waste generated by laboratory and operational processes.
- Ensure appropriate audits are performed and maintain records of inspections.
- Provide personnel monitoring for permissible exposure limits (PELs) as specified in the Laboratory Standard.
- Respond to significant chemical spills as necessary.
- Serve as the EPA and Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation (TDEC) compliance officer, maintaining required documentation and submitting the Hazardous Waste Annual Report.
- Work with the Director of Facilities Operations to ensure occupational safety training and compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines.
