Align your degree to project disciplines
Michael Baker International files H-1B petitions under specialty occupation, which requires a directly related degree. A civil or structural engineering degree maps cleanly to their infrastructure project work. An unrelated field, even with experience, creates petition risk.
Target their transportation and infrastructure divisions
Project Engineer openings at Michael Baker International concentrate in highway, bridge, and transit work tied to state DOT contracts. Filtering your applications to these divisions increases the chance you land in a group that actively sponsors and has recurring hiring needs.
Search open Project Engineer roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Michael Baker International's Project Engineer listings by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're not manually sorting through roles that won't support your status. Start your search there before going directly to the company careers page.
Raise OPT timeline in early conversations
If you're on F-1 OPT, bring up your authorization end date before an offer is extended. Michael Baker International supports CPT and OPT, but the H-1B cap lottery timeline means starting the conversation early is what determines whether your status bridges without a gap.
Expect PERM for permanent residency
Green Card sponsorship in consulting typically runs through PERM labor certification with DOL before the I-140 petition. At a firm like Michael Baker International, this process usually starts after you've demonstrated performance for a year or more in the role.
Confirm PE licensure requirements by role
Some Project Engineer positions at Michael Baker International require or accelerate toward a Professional Engineer license, which affects how they structure the role and its progression. Clarify during interviews whether the position is EIT-level or expects active licensure, as this shapes the H-1B specialty occupation framing.

Find Project Engineer at Michael Baker International JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Project Engineers?
Yes. Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for Project Engineer roles, which qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria due to the degree requirements in civil, structural, or environmental engineering. Because the H-1B is subject to the annual cap and lottery, timing your offer and application cycle to the April filing window is essential. Confirm sponsorship intent explicitly during the offer stage.
How do I apply for Project Engineer jobs at Michael Baker International?
You can apply directly through the Michael Baker International careers page or use Migrate Mate to browse their open Project Engineer listings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility. Tailor your application to the specific discipline, such as transportation, water, or structural, and highlight relevant project experience and your current work authorization status so recruiters can assess timeline fit upfront.
Which visa types does Michael Baker International commonly use for Project Engineers?
Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for the majority of international Project Engineers and also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates transitioning from U.S. universities. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. For long-term sponsorship, the company supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through the PERM labor certification process with DOL.
What qualifications and experience does Michael Baker International expect for Project Engineers?
Most Project Engineer roles require a bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, structural, or a related engineering discipline. Many positions expect Engineer-in-Training status or progress toward a Professional Engineer license. Relevant project experience in infrastructure, transportation, or environmental consulting strengthens your application, and familiarity with federal or state DOT project delivery processes is frequently referenced in their job postings.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Project Engineer role?
The H-1B cap lottery opens in March each year, with an October 1 start date for approved petitions. If you're on F-1 OPT, you need to receive an offer and have your employer file the H-1B petition before your OPT expires. STEM OPT extension can give you up to 24 additional months of work authorization as a bridge. Align your job search and offer timeline to the preceding fall or winter to stay ahead of the April filing deadline.
