Tailor your credentials to government legal work
Highlight experience with legal research, case file management, and administrative law in your application materials. Government attorneys prioritize candidates who can support high-volume litigation dockets, so evidence of courtroom support or regulatory filing experience strengthens your profile.
Identify openings through official government portals
Attorney General offices typically post Legal Assistant vacancies on state or federal government job boards alongside USAJOBS. Filter for positions that explicitly list H-1B sponsorship or visa assistance, as not every posting will sponsor and applying selectively saves time.
Confirm the office's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
H-1B sponsorship through a government employer requires E-Verify participation. Before accepting any offer, verify the specific office location is enrolled, since regional Attorney General offices sometimes operate under separate employer identification numbers with independent compliance obligations.
Align your offer letter timeline with USCIS filing windows
H-1B petitions for new employment have specific filing windows tied to your current status. If you're transitioning from OPT or another visa, coordinate your offer acceptance date with the employer's legal team so the I-129 petition is filed before your current authorization expires.
Use Migrate Mate to find Legal Assistant roles that sponsor
Search Migrate Mate to surface Legal Assistant openings at the Office of the Attorney General and similar government law employers that have an active H-1B sponsorship record, so you're targeting positions where sponsorship is realistic rather than speculative.
Prepare a degree equivalency analysis if your credentials are foreign
USCIS requires that Legal Assistant specialty occupation petitions demonstrate a direct relationship between your degree field and the role. If your law or paralegal degree is from outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency before the petition is filed.

Find Legal Assistant at Office of the Attorney General JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Office of the Attorney General sponsor H-1B visas for Legal Assistants?
Yes, the Office of the Attorney General has sponsored H-1B visas for Legal Assistant roles. As a government employer, it must demonstrate prevailing wage compliance through a certified Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL before USCIS can approve the petition. Sponsorship availability can vary by office location and budget cycle, so confirming with the hiring team during the interview process is advisable.
How do I apply for Legal Assistant jobs at Office of the Attorney General?
Applications are typically submitted through official government job portals, where vacancies are posted with position-specific requirements. Prepare a resume that emphasizes legal research, document management, and familiarity with court or regulatory procedures. You can also browse active Legal Assistant openings at the Office of the Attorney General with visa sponsorship history directly through Migrate Mate to identify positions that align with your background.
Which visa types are commonly used for Legal Assistant roles at Office of the Attorney General?
The H-1B is the primary nonimmigrant work visa used for Legal Assistant positions at the Office of the Attorney General, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a related field such as law, paralegal studies, or political science. In some cases, candidates already holding TN or O-1 status may be able to transfer sponsorship, but the H-1B is the most established pathway for this employer and role combination.
What qualifications are expected for Legal Assistant positions at Office of the Attorney General?
Most postings require a bachelor's degree in a field related to law or legal studies, along with demonstrated experience in legal research, drafting correspondence, and case file management. Government legal offices often prioritize candidates familiar with civil litigation support, regulatory agency procedures, or public records law. Paralegal certification from a recognized body can strengthen an application, particularly for roles supporting specialized divisions like environmental law or consumer protection.
How do I think about the H-1B sponsorship timeline when targeting this employer?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, the petition must be filed in April for an October 1 start date, meaning the offer needs to be in place several months earlier to allow time for LCA certification through DOL. Government employers like the Office of the Attorney General are cap-subject unless affiliated with a qualifying institution, so planning your job search around that annual cycle reduces the risk of gaps in work authorization.
