Key Responsibilities
- Innovate, design, and develop new security features in our next-generation firewalls, focusing on Layer 7 identity and inspection.
- Develop functional specifications, assess task requirements and scheduling, and assist in development, debugging, and support.
- Suggest and implement improvements to the development process.
- Clearly communicate goals and desired outcomes to internal project teams.
- Interview, mentor, and coach new team members.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and continuously implement improvements.
Qualifications

- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical/military experience
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant time in senior technical leadership roles
- Strong proficiency in C and C++ programming languages on Unix-based platforms.
- Solid understanding of software development methodologies, version control systems, and agile practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, and familiarity with security protocols such as TLS and L4-L7 protocols.
- Experience working with TLS and Web proxies.
- Experience in developing and optimizing software for performance, scalability, and security.
- Excellent understanding of various AI agents and ability to use them as a co-pilot.

For candidates who receive an offer at the posted level, the starting base salary (for non-sales roles) or base salary + commission target (for sales/commissioned roles) is expected to be the annual range listed below. Frame your credentials around zero-trust expertise
Palo Alto Networks hires Principals to lead thinking in areas like SASE, Cortex, and cloud security. Tailor your resume and portfolio to show domain depth in those platforms, not just general security or software experience.
Identify roles across multiple business units
Principal openings at Palo Alto Networks span engineering, product, and go-to-market functions. Search across Prisma Cloud, Cortex XDR, and Unit 42 specifically, since sponsorship eligibility and hiring urgency vary by unit.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
Palo Alto Networks sponsors H-1B, E-3, and TN visas, but the petition structure differs for each. Know which category applies to your nationality before the recruiter screen so you can address it confidently, not reactively.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring Principal roles
Not every Principal listing at large tech employers includes sponsorship language. Use Migrate Mate to filter Palo Alto Networks roles confirmed to support your specific visa type, saving you outreach on positions that won't progress.
Prepare for USCIS specialty occupation scrutiny at the Principal level
Principal titles can trigger USCIS requests for evidence if the role sounds managerial rather than technical. Work with your employer's immigration counsel to ensure the job description clearly establishes a degree requirement in a specific field.
Align your start date with H-1B cap timelines if you need a new petition
If your H-1B requires a cap-subject lottery filing, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start. Palo Alto Networks recruiters understand this cycle, so flag it early to avoid offer expiration while waiting on lottery results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Palo Alto Networks sponsor H-1B visas for Principals?
Yes, Palo Alto Networks sponsors H-1B visas for Principal-level roles across engineering, product, and security functions. If you're already on an H-1B with another employer, Palo Alto Networks can file an H-1B transfer, letting you start work as soon as the receipt notice is issued without waiting for approval.
Which visa types does Palo Alto Networks commonly sponsor for Principal roles?
Palo Alto Networks sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Principal positions, and supports Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 through PERM labor certification. Australian citizens should ask about the E-3 visa specifically, since it has no lottery and faster processing than a cap-subject H-1B petition.
How do I apply for Principal jobs at Palo Alto Networks?
Applications go through Palo Alto Networks' careers portal, but roles fill quickly and many aren't posted for long. Migrate Mate aggregates verified Principal openings at Palo Alto Networks filtered by visa sponsorship type, so you can identify active listings and apply before they close. Referrals from current employees carry significant weight at the Principal level.
What qualifications does Palo Alto Networks expect for Principal roles?
Expectations vary by function, but most Principal roles require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related field, paired with substantial hands-on experience in cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, or enterprise software. For USCIS H-1B purposes, the degree field must align with the specific role, so generalist backgrounds with no clear specialty can create petition complications.
How do I plan my timeline if Palo Alto Networks is sponsoring my visa?
For H-1B transfers or E-3 applications, the process typically runs four to eight weeks from offer acceptance to work authorization, depending on whether premium processing is used. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship takes considerably longer, often two or more years. Raise your visa situation with the recruiter before the offer stage so the immigration team can plan the filing sequence accurately.
