Translate your credentials into U.S. equivalents
If you earned a construction or engineering degree outside the U.S., get it evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator before applying. University facilities departments often require documented degree equivalency to move a sponsorship case forward with USCIS.
Target facilities and capital projects postings
Sam Houston State hires construction professionals through its Facilities Management and Capital Projects divisions. Filter your job search to those departments specifically, since sponsorship decisions are often made at the department level, not centrally by HR.
Confirm the role qualifies as a specialty occupation
H-1B sponsorship for construction roles hinges on whether the position requires a specific bachelor's degree. Construction management and project engineering roles typically qualify. Field supervisor or trades-focused roles with no degree requirement often do not, so clarify job duties early.
Ask about PERM timelines before accepting an offer
If permanent residency through EB-2 or EB-3 is your goal, ask during negotiations whether the university initiates PERM after a set employment period. DOL's PERM process can take over a year, so understanding the university's internal policy early shapes your long-term planning.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open construction roles
Browsing open construction positions at Sam Houston State University that are open to visa sponsorship is straightforward through Migrate Mate, which filters jobs by employer and visa type so you can focus your applications where sponsorship is actively available.
Prepare your I-94 and status documentation before interviews
University HR departments running E-Verify checks need to confirm your work authorization status quickly. Have your current I-94 record, visa stamp, and any EAD or OPT documentation organized before your first interview so the hiring process does not stall on your end.

Find Construction at Sam Houston State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Sam Houston State University sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes, Sam Houston State University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying construction roles, primarily those that meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard, meaning the position requires a specific bachelor's degree in a related field. Construction management, project engineering, and facilities planning roles generally meet that bar. Trades-focused or supervisory roles without a formal degree requirement are less likely to qualify, so confirming the job description's educational requirements before applying is essential.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at Sam Houston State University?
Applications go through Sam Houston State University's official careers portal at SHSU. Search for postings under Facilities Management or Capital Projects, as those are the primary departments hiring for construction-related roles. Tailor your resume to highlight project management, campus infrastructure experience, or construction oversight credentials. If you need visa sponsorship, address your work authorization status early in the process, ideally in your cover letter, so recruiters can loop in HR before extending an offer.
Which visa types are commonly used for Construction roles at Sam Houston State University?
The H-1B is the most common pathway for construction professionals at U.S. universities, covering specialty occupation roles like construction management or project engineering. Sam Houston State also sponsors TN visas for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories. For students finishing degrees in related fields, F-1 OPT provides a practical way to gain initial work authorization while a longer-term sponsorship case is evaluated. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways are also available for permanent positions.
What qualifications are expected for Construction positions at Sam Houston State University?
Most construction roles at Sam Houston State require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field, especially for positions the university would consider sponsoring. Practical experience with capital projects, facilities operations, or institutional construction is highly valued in a university setting. Familiarity with public procurement processes, construction contracts, and safety compliance is a distinct advantage, since Texas public universities operate under state contracting regulations that differ from private-sector construction environments.
How do I find Construction jobs at Sam Houston State University that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to browse construction openings at Sam Houston State University filtered by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from manually screening postings for sponsorship eligibility. Once you identify a role, cross-reference it against the university's careers portal for the full job description. Roles posted under Facilities Management or Capital Projects are your best targets, and applying during the university's budget planning cycle, typically late spring and early fall, often aligns with when new construction positions open up.
