Align Your Credentials to Texas Teaching Standards
Sam Houston State evaluates K-12 education candidates against Texas Education Agency competency frameworks. Before applying, verify your international teaching credentials align with TEA standards or obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service to avoid delays during the offer stage.
Target Roles in Teacher Preparation Programs
SHSU's College of Education often hires for clinical supervision and field instruction roles that directly support K-12 teacher pipelines. These positions frequently qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B standards because they require a directly related degree, strengthening your petition.
Search Open Education Roles Through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter K-12 education jobs at Sam Houston State University by visa type. You can identify which current openings align with your authorization, saving time before you invest in tailoring your application materials.
Initiate Sponsorship Conversations Before Offer Stage
University HR departments run on semester hiring cycles. Raising visa sponsorship needs during initial interviews, not after a verbal offer, gives SHSU's international office adequate runway to coordinate USCIS filing timelines with departmental budget approvals.
Understand How F-1 OPT Bridges to H-1B at Universities
If you're on F-1 OPT, universities like SHSU qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning petitions can be filed year-round without waiting for the April lottery. Your OPT expiration date still governs your work authorization until USCIS approves the H-1B change of status.
Prepare a PERM-Ready Employment History Early
If your role leads toward an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, SHSU must complete PERM labor certification with DOL before filing. Organize your employment history, foreign degree equivalencies, and reference contacts now so the university's counsel can complete the prevailing wage request without delays.

Find K 12 Education at Sam Houston State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Sam Houston State University sponsor H-1B visas for K-12 Education roles?
Yes, Sam Houston State University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying K-12 education positions. As a university, SHSU is a cap-exempt employer, which means it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS at any point in the year rather than competing in the annual April lottery. This significantly improves timing flexibility for candidates who need sponsorship.
How do I apply for K-12 Education jobs at Sam Houston State University?
Applications go through SHSU's official careers portal, where education roles are posted by department. Tailor your materials to Texas Education Agency competency standards and address visa sponsorship needs early in the process. Migrate Mate also lists open K-12 education roles at Sam Houston State University filtered by visa type, so you can identify relevant openings before applying directly.
Which visa types are commonly used for K-12 Education roles at Sam Houston State University?
The most common pathways for K-12 education roles at SHSU are H-1B, J-1, and F-1 OPT or CPT for recent graduates. TN visas apply for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying education occupations. For long-term permanent residence, SHSU has supported EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM labor certification filed with the Department of Labor.
What qualifications are expected for K-12 Education positions at Sam Houston State University?
Most K-12 education roles at SHSU require at minimum a bachelor's degree in education or a related field, and many positions in teacher preparation or curriculum instruction require a master's degree or doctoral credential. Candidates with Texas teaching certification or equivalent state licensure, along with direct classroom or instructional coaching experience, are strongly preferred. International credentials should be formally evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process typically take for a K-12 Education hire at SHSU?
Because SHSU is cap-exempt, USCIS standard processing for an H-1B petition typically takes three to five months from filing. Premium processing reduces that to roughly 15 business days for an additional USCIS fee. Factor in the time your employer needs to prepare the Labor Condition Application with DOL and coordinate with university legal counsel before the petition is filed.
