Nursing Academic Success Coordinator

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Nursing Academic Success Coordinator focuses on student retention and academic success in the undergraduate nursing programs. The person in this role is responsible for identifying tutoring needs and following up with at-risk students in collaboration with faculty and the Undergraduate Director. The role requires implementation of a structured academic success program that uses multiple resources and teaching/learning modalities. Additionally, this person is responsible for developing targeted remediation goals/objectives each semester and conducting in-person and virtual remediation events for groups and/or individuals that strengthen student success in the nursing program.

The Nursing Academic Success Coordinator will participate with faculty in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program. They will participate in student selection, student advising, curriculum decisions, program revisions, program evaluation, resource selection, and other matters assigned to support the mission of the university, division, and nursing program.

This Division of Nursing staff position requires work in non-traditional hours, virtually or in person, to meet the needs of students and/or faculty. It is a full-time, on-campus position (not a remote position).

The student population served includes all nursing students in the undergraduate and vocational nursing programs: Vocational Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Demonstrates current knowledge of concepts assessed by the NCLEX-RN as well as current, evidence-based nursing practice to provide academic support.
• Assists in the creation of Next Generation NCLEX activities/workshops.
• Participates in outreach to students with at-risk referrals and collaborates with the Director of Undergraduate Nursing and faculty on a plan of action for student tutoring activities, monitoring, and resolution.
• Demonstrates effective behaviors and accountability in meeting the following standards of service excellence to students, fellow team members, and external agencies: Friendliness and courtesy, professional environment, effective communication, and first-class service.
• Communicates and documents/reports students’ academic progression toward achievement of student and program learning outcomes to the Director and faculty team at monthly committee meetings.
• Provides individualized academic coaching, professional mentoring, and career guidance for nursing students throughout their academic journey.
• Weekly office hours and scheduled individual or group tutoring is expected for each nursing program.
• Coordinates and documents student/faculty advising meetings/schedule with faculty and students.
• Communicates with course faculty results of student success, academic coaching, success planning, learning support, and student development efforts in a timely manner.
• Develops a systematic method of managing student progress and needs throughout the nursing program.
• Develops success and remediation plans with students for student improvement and/or growth.
• Develops and facilitates recurring programming on study strategies, time management, executive functioning, professionalism, and academic success.
• Schedules regular meetings with students who are at-risk for being unsuccessful in a course or the nursing program.
• Assists students in identifying and utilizing resources that may contribute to their success.
• Supports students’ learning through virtual group tutorials, workshops, remediation sessions, and one-on-one meetings to improve course performance and/or readiness for re-entry into the nursing program.
• Creates, maintains, and presents reports for monitoring student success markers such as grade reports, benchmarking exam trends, retention, progression, and attrition rates, and more as directed by the Director of Undergraduate Nursing.
• Collects, collates, and presents data retrieved from student surveys to illustrate program outcomes.
• Assists students in developing professional identity and career readiness.
• Verifies and maintains student compliance for admissions and clinical coordination.
• Attends marketing events and other meetings in coordination with the Director of Undergraduate Nursing.
• Maintains FERPA standards for student privacy.
• Assists with proctoring admission TEAS and ATI examinations in collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Nursing, faculty, and staff.
• Attendance at nursing department meetings, intermittent student recruitment events, and other departmental meetings as per the Nursing Department Handbook.
• Assists with ongoing evaluation of didactic and online/hybrid courses and the nursing programs.
• Collaborates with Career Services and Meaningful Work to connect students with internships, employment, and professional development opportunities.
• Assists in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of nursing peer tutors.
• Follows the Schreiner University Student and Faculty Handbooks in the delivery of this role.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Undergraduate Nursing.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

• Current, unencumbered Texas or compact Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
• 1+ years of experience in a nursing academic program as either faculty or in classroom support and tutoring capacity.
• Have a minimum of five years of nursing practice as a registered nurse in a clinical setting prior to appointment.
• MSN or Master’s Degree in Education with nursing license preferred.
• BSN considered with teaching and/or nursing academic experience.
• Prefer prior experience in management of nursing student outcomes.
• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR required. ACLS and/or PALS preferred.

SKILLS:

• Comprehension of and familiarity with Texas BON guidelines and regulations.
• Comprehend, comply, and implement nursing education in accordance with Schreiner University and the undergraduate nursing program policies and procedures.
• Have strong analytical and critical thinking skills with superior attention to detail.
• Knowledge and experience using a variety of teaching methodologies focused on adult learners.
• Ability to accomplish tasks independently and with minimal supervision.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and communication skills.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
• Ability to work as a team member toward the common goal of the University.
• Database planning, implementation, and planning experience via Microsoft Word applications such as TEAMS, EXCEL, and Word.
• Must be familiar with database management and appropriate software.
