Target academic and research roles first
SMU's sponsorship activity is concentrated in faculty, research, and specialized professional positions. Focus your search on academic departments, research centers, and administrative roles that require advanced degrees, these are the positions most likely to come with visa support.
Understand SMU's H-1B sponsorship pattern
SMU is an active H-1B sponsor with a strong track record. When applying, confirm upfront that the role is designated as H-1B eligible, university HR departments typically document this clearly in job postings or respond directly to sponsorship inquiries.
Ask about Green Card sponsorship pathways early
SMU has sponsored permanent residency through EB-2 and EB-3 categories. If long-term U.S. residency is your goal, raise the topic during the offer negotiation stage, universities are generally more open to PERM sponsorship than private-sector employers.
Leverage SMU's OPT and CPT infrastructure if you're an F-1 student
As an active F-1 employer, SMU has established systems for OPT and CPT hiring. If you're completing a degree nearby or already in F-1 status, SMU's familiarity with these work authorization types reduces friction during onboarding.
Connect with SMU's international hiring departments directly
SMU employs international scholars across engineering, business, law, and the sciences. Reaching out to department-level hiring managers or faculty search committees, not just central HR, can surface opportunities before they're widely posted.
