Align your credentials to U.S. academic standards
Syracuse evaluates foreign degrees carefully, so get your transcripts formally evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before applying. A three-year bachelor's degree may need supplemental documentation to meet the equivalent standard for faculty roles.
Target departments with active faculty searches
Syracuse posts faculty and lecturer openings by school, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, and the iSchool. Searching by academic unit helps you find roles that match your discipline and are actively recruiting, not just archived postings.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
Teaching roles at Syracuse can fall under H-1B, J-1, or TN depending on your nationality and appointment type. Ask the hiring department which visa the university intends to file during the offer negotiation, not after you've accepted, since the timeline and requirements differ significantly.
Use Migrate Mate to track open Teaching roles at Syracuse
Faculty and instructor positions at Syracuse aren't always easy to surface across general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Syracuse University Teaching openings that include visa sponsorship, so you're targeting verified roles rather than guessing from the listing description.
Prepare your PERM documentation early for tenure-track paths
If your Teaching role leads to EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, Syracuse's HR and legal teams will need to conduct a PERM labor market test. Gather your publications, teaching evaluations, and letters of recommendation before that process starts, as DOL review can add months to the timeline.

Find Teaching at Syracuse University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Syracuse University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, Syracuse University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions, including faculty, lecturers, and instructors in specialty occupation roles. The university works with its international services office to file H-1B petitions with USCIS. Tenure-track and full-time instructional roles are the most commonly sponsored positions, and the university can also petition for H-1B extensions and amendments as your role evolves.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Syracuse University?
Applications for Teaching roles go through Syracuse University's official careers portal, where positions are listed by academic unit and appointment type. Faculty searches typically require a cover letter, CV, teaching statement, and sample publications or syllabi. Migrate Mate also aggregates Syracuse Teaching openings filtered by visa sponsorship availability, which makes it easier to identify roles before applying through the university's system.
Which visa types does Syracuse University commonly use for Teaching roles?
Syracuse supports several visa categories for Teaching staff depending on the role and nationality. H-1B is the most common pathway for full-time faculty and lecturers. J-1 exchange visitor visas are used for visiting scholars and short-term teaching appointments. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying instructional roles. For permanent positions, the university may sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card petitions through PERM labor certification.
What qualifications are typically expected for Teaching roles at Syracuse University?
Requirements vary by department and appointment level. Tenure-track faculty positions generally require a terminal degree, such as a Ph.D. or MFA, in the relevant discipline, along with a research or teaching portfolio. Lecturer and instructor roles may accept a master's degree plus demonstrated teaching experience. For visa purposes, your degree must directly relate to the subject area you're teaching to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements under the H-1B.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Teaching role at Syracuse?
Timeline depends on visa type and your current status. H-1B petitions filed with USCIS standard processing can take three to six months, while premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. If you're moving from F-1 OPT, cap-subject H-1B sponsorship means the earliest you can start working under H-1B status is October 1. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship for permanent Teaching roles typically adds one to two years before an I-140 petition can be filed.
