Align Your Credentials to Specialty Occupation Standards
For H-1B eligibility, your degree field must directly relate to the courses you'll teach. If your doctorate is in a adjacent discipline, gather syllabi and course catalogs showing the subject-matter overlap USCIS reviewers look for in academic instructor petitions.
Target Departments With Recurring Instructor Openings
Syracuse regularly hires instructors in engineering, communications, and information studies. Apply to departments that post instructor searches annually rather than one-off replacements, since recurring searches signal a pipeline that supports the longer sponsorship timeline for international candidates.
Clarify Sponsorship Before Accepting Any Offer
Ask HR during the offer stage which visa category they intend to file, whether they cover premium processing, and what their typical timeline from offer letter to USCIS approval looks like. Getting this in writing protects you if your start date depends on status authorization.
Understand How J-1 Affects Your H-1B Path
Syracuse sponsors J-1 exchange visitor visas for visiting instructors, but a two-year home residency requirement can block a later H-1B. Confirm with the Office of International Services whether your J-1 category triggers that requirement before accepting a J-1 appointment.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Verified Instructor Openings
Search Migrate Mate to filter Syracuse University instructor roles by visa type so you're only applying to positions where sponsorship is confirmed, saving time you'd otherwise spend chasing HR for eligibility answers after submitting an application.
Plan Around the Academic Hiring Calendar for PERM Timing
If your goal is an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card through PERM, the DOL process requires Syracuse to run a good-faith recruitment effort. Academic hiring cycles run August through February, so a PERM filing typically begins after that recruitment window closes, meaning permanent residence timelines stretch well beyond your first contract year.

Find Instructor at Syracuse University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Syracuse University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Syracuse University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation, meaning it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. The university's Office of International Services handles the petition process, and sponsorship is typically initiated after a formal offer is extended and accepted.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Syracuse University?
Applications go through Syracuse University's official careers portal, where instructor openings are listed by college and department. You can also browse verified instructor roles at Syracuse that include visa sponsorship information on Migrate Mate, which filters positions by work authorization type so you can confirm sponsorship eligibility before you apply.
Which visa types does Syracuse University commonly use for Instructor roles?
Syracuse sponsors H-1B visas for instructors in specialty occupation roles, J-1 exchange visitor visas for visiting or short-term teaching appointments, and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic categories. For instructors on F-1 OPT or CPT, the university can serve as the authorizing employer. Long-term hires may also pursue EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM.
What qualifications does Syracuse University expect for Instructor positions?
Minimum qualifications vary by college, but most instructor roles require at least a master's degree in the relevant discipline, with a doctorate preferred for upper-division or graduate-level teaching. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate prior teaching experience, a developed course portfolio, and a research or professional record that aligns with the department's curricular needs.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship to start an Instructor role at Syracuse?
Standard H-1B petitions filed by April 1 have an October 1 start date under the cap, which aligns well with the fall semester but can complicate spring teaching appointments. If you're already in valid H-1B status with another employer, a concurrent or transferring petition can move faster. Premium processing through USCIS currently guarantees a decision within 15 business days and is worth requesting if your contract start date is time-sensitive.
