Align your credentials to U.S. laboratory standards
Thermo Fisher's Laboratory roles often require documented proficiency with specific instrumentation, such as LC-MS, PCR, or flow cytometry. Verify your credentials translate clearly to U.S. equivalents before applying, since USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation eligibility for lab positions.
Target sites with active research or manufacturing operations
Thermo Fisher sponsors visas most actively at sites tied to bioproduction, clinical diagnostics, or pharmaceutical manufacturing. Filtering your search by location to facilities in Massachusetts, California, or North Carolina improves your odds of landing a sponsorship-eligible opening.
Distinguish contract versus direct-hire Laboratory postings
Some Laboratory openings at Thermo Fisher are staffed through third-party contractors who cannot sponsor visas. Confirm the role is a direct Thermo Fisher position before investing time in the application, since only direct hires qualify for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship through the company.
Use Migrate Mate to surface sponsorship-verified Laboratory roles
Not every Laboratory posting at Thermo Fisher explicitly states visa sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles where Thermo Fisher has a verified sponsorship history, so you're applying to positions with a realistic path to an H-1B or EB-3 filing.
Start OPT early to cover PERM processing timelines
If you're on F-1 OPT targeting a permanent role, the PERM labor certification process alone can take 12 months or more before an EB-2 or EB-3 petition is filed. Starting your job search at least six months before OPT expires gives you and the employer workable runway.
Prepare a role-specific petition support package
For Laboratory roles, your employer's immigration counsel will need documentation tying your degree field directly to the job duties. Gather transcripts, a detailed CV listing instruments and methodologies, and any publications or certifications before Thermo Fisher initiates your H-1B I-129 filing with USCIS.

Does Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsor H-1B visas for Laboratory roles?
Yes, Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsors H-1B visas for Laboratory professionals. The company works with immigration counsel to file I-129 petitions for qualifying roles in research, quality control, and manufacturing science. Sponsorship is most common for direct-hire positions that require a relevant bachelor's degree or higher in a specialized scientific field, which satisfies the H-1B specialty occupation standard.
How do I apply for Laboratory jobs at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Applications are submitted through Thermo Fisher's careers portal. Search by job function using terms like 'scientist,' 'laboratory analyst,' or 'research associate,' then filter by location. Before applying, confirm the posting is a direct hire and not a contract role, since contract positions are not eligible for Thermo Fisher-sponsored visas. Migrate Mate can help you identify sponsorship-eligible openings specifically.
Which visa types does Thermo Fisher Scientific commonly use for Laboratory positions?
Thermo Fisher sponsors H-1B visas for most mid-level and senior Laboratory hires, and supports EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways for employees moving toward permanent residence. The company also accepts candidates on F-1 OPT and CPT for entry-level roles, and TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying scientific occupations under the USMCA.
What qualifications does Thermo Fisher Scientific expect for sponsored Laboratory roles?
Most sponsored Laboratory roles require at minimum a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with relevant instrumentation, such as HPLC, mass spectrometry, or cell culture techniques, is typically required rather than preferred. Senior roles may require a master's degree or several years of industry experience in pharmaceutical, clinical, or analytical laboratory environments.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Laboratory hire at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
For H-1B sponsorship, count on at least six to eight months from offer acceptance to work authorization if you're subject to the annual cap lottery, since USCIS registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. Cap-exempt scenarios or TN status can move faster. PERM-based Green Card filings typically add 12 to 18 months on top of that timeline before an I-140 petition is submitted.
