Align your credentials with PE licensure expectations
Thompson Engineering's structural consulting work often requires or expects progress toward a Professional Engineer license. Have your foreign degree evaluated by a NACES-member credential evaluator before applying so your qualifications translate clearly to U.S. hiring standards.
Target project types matching your specialization
Structural consulting firms assign engineers by sector experience. Review Thompson Engineering's posted roles for project keywords like commercial, infrastructure, or industrial and apply to openings that align with your portfolio, since niche project fit speeds the internal sponsorship decision.
Understand the H-1B1 timeline before your interview
The H-1B1 is not subject to the annual lottery and can be filed multiple times per year. If Thompson Engineering extends an offer, confirm they're prepared to file promptly, since H-1B1 consular processing at a U.S. embassy typically takes two to four weeks after DOL Labor Condition Application certification.
Prepare a portfolio demonstrating structural analysis software fluency
Consulting firms like Thompson Engineering expect proficiency in tools such as SAP2000, ETABS, or RISA. Documenting specific project deliverables and software used in your resume strengthens your case that you can contribute immediately, which matters when an employer is weighing sponsorship costs.
Search open structural roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Structural Engineer openings at Thompson Engineering by visa sponsorship type. This lets you verify which active postings explicitly support H-1B1 sponsorship before investing time in tailoring your application.
Confirm your employer's LCA obligations during offer negotiation
Before accepting an offer, verify that the salary Thompson Engineering proposes meets the prevailing wage for your work location under DOL guidelines. Underpaying relative to the prevailing wage is a common compliance gap that can delay or jeopardize your LCA certification.

Does Thompson Engineering sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Thompson Engineering sponsors international Structural Engineers through the H-1B1 visa, which is a variant of the H-1B available to Australian and Chilean nationals. Unlike the standard H-1B, the H-1B1 bypasses the annual lottery and can be filed year-round, making it a faster path for qualifying candidates. If you hold citizenship from a non-H-1B1 eligible country, discuss standard H-1B sponsorship directly with the hiring team during the offer stage.
Which visa types are commonly used for Structural Engineer roles at Thompson Engineering?
The H-1B1 is the primary visa Thompson Engineering has used for Structural Engineer sponsorship. Structural engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines because the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Candidates already holding an H-1B from a prior employer may also be eligible for a transfer, which avoids the lottery entirely and allows work authorization to continue while USCIS processes the new petition.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Structural Engineer roles at Thompson Engineering?
Thompson Engineering's structural openings generally require a bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering. Candidates with hands-on experience in structural analysis, design documentation, and engineering software used in consulting environments are strongly positioned. Progress toward a Professional Engineer license is commonly expected at the mid-level and above. Foreign degrees should be evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service to confirm equivalency with U.S. educational standards before you apply.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Thompson Engineering?
You can browse and apply for open Structural Engineer positions at Thompson Engineering through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm H-1B1 eligibility before applying. Once you identify a relevant posting, tailor your resume to reflect the project types and technical tools listed in the job description. After submitting your application, the process typically moves through a technical screening, interviews, and then offer negotiation where visa sponsorship details are confirmed.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline after receiving an offer from Thompson Engineering?
Once you accept an offer, your employer initiates the Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which must be certified before the H-1B1 petition or consular appointment can proceed. DOL LCA certification typically takes seven business days under standard processing. After certification, H-1B1 applicants proceeding via consular processing schedule an appointment at a U.S. embassy. Build at least four to six weeks into your expected start date to account for LCA processing, appointment scheduling, and administrative processing at the consulate.
