Align your portfolio to Gresham Smith's project types
Gresham Smith works across healthcare facilities, transportation infrastructure, and commercial buildings. Tailoring your portfolio to show relevant structural experience in these sectors signals a direct fit and strengthens your case before sponsorship conversations begin.
Verify your PE license transferability across states
Gresham Smith operates across multiple U.S. states, and some roles require a licensed Professional Engineer. Check whether your home-country credentials qualify for comity or expedited licensure pathways, since sponsorship timelines and role eligibility can depend on it.
Use Migrate Mate to target open Structural Engineer roles
Gresham Smith posts roles across multiple offices and practice areas. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Structural Engineer openings at Gresham Smith that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're not wasting applications on roles that aren't viable for your situation.
Address H-1B timing early in offer negotiations
If you need H-1B sponsorship, the annual cap and October 1 start date are fixed constraints. Raise your visa status and timeline requirements clearly during the offer stage so Gresham Smith's HR team can confirm cap-subject or cap-exempt filing eligibility before you accept.
Prepare your academic credentials for USCIS specialty occupation review
Structural Engineer roles typically require a civil or structural engineering degree. USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims, so get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before your employer files, especially if your degree is from outside the U.S.
Understand how PERM affects long-term green card planning
Gresham Smith sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, which require DOL PERM labor certification. This process takes months before USCIS filing even begins. Ask your hiring contact about the firm's typical PERM timeline so you can plan your status continuity accordingly.

Does Gresham Smith sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Yes, Gresham Smith sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Engineer roles. Structural engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which is the foundational requirement for H-1B eligibility. If you're subject to the annual cap, your start date will be tied to the October 1 fiscal year, so timing your offer and application accordingly is important.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Gresham Smith?
You can apply directly through Gresham Smith's careers page or browse their open Structural Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for positions open to visa sponsorship. When applying, highlight structural project experience relevant to Gresham Smith's practice areas, including healthcare, transportation, and commercial construction, and be upfront about your visa requirements in your cover letter or initial screening call.
Which visa types does Gresham Smith commonly use for Structural Engineer roles?
Gresham Smith sponsors multiple visa categories for Structural Engineers, including H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for candidates pursuing a Green Card. The right visa depends on your nationality, degree level, and whether you're already in the U.S.
What qualifications does Gresham Smith expect for Structural Engineer roles?
Most Structural Engineer roles at Gresham Smith require a bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited program. Proficiency with structural analysis software is expected, and some roles, particularly senior positions, require or prefer a Professional Engineer license. USCIS will also evaluate whether your specific degree field directly supports the job duties when reviewing an H-1B petition.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Structural Engineer at Gresham Smith?
Timeline depends on the visa type. H-1B processing through USCIS takes roughly three to six months with standard processing, or two to four weeks with premium processing. PERM labor certification for EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards can add six months to over a year before USCIS filing begins. TN status for Canadian nationals can be obtained at the border in a single day. Clarify expected timelines with Gresham Smith's HR team early in the offer process.
