Align your credentials to U.S. licensing standards
Many engineering roles at Gresham Smith require or prefer candidates working toward a Professional Engineer license. Have your international degree evaluated by NCES or a NCEES-approved credential evaluator before applying so there are no delays at the offer stage.
Target project types matching your visa category
Gresham Smith staffs engineers across healthcare, transportation, and water infrastructure projects. If you're on F-1 OPT, prioritize applying to projects in government-funded sectors, where cap-exempt or STEM OPT extension eligibility is more straightforward to maintain.
Browse Gresham Smith openings through Migrate Mate
Filtering by visa type saves significant research time when targeting firms with a sponsorship history. Use Migrate Mate to surface current Gresham Smith engineering openings filtered by the visa types they've sponsored, so you're applying strategically from day one.
Clarify H-1B cap timing during offer negotiations
H-1B petitions for cap-subject roles must be filed for the October 1 start date. If you receive an offer outside the filing window, negotiate a conditional start date and confirm with the hiring manager that the company files through an experienced immigration attorney, not in-house only.
Document your specialty occupation case early
USCIS scrutinizes H-1B petitions where the job title is broad, such as Project Engineer. Request a detailed offer letter specifying required degree fields, core duties, and technical software used so the specialty occupation argument is airtight before the I-129 is drafted.
Prepare for PERM if you want permanent residency
EB-2 and EB-3 filings require DOL PERM labor certification, which involves a supervised recruitment process that can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS ever sees the petition. Ask during interviews whether Gresham Smith initiates PERM concurrently with H-1B sponsorship.

Does Gresham Smith sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Gresham Smith sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying engineering roles. Sponsorship is tied to roles that meet USCIS specialty occupation requirements, meaning the position must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Offers typically come with a filing timeline aligned to the annual H-1B cap and October 1 start date.
Which visa types are commonly used for Engineering roles at Gresham Smith?
Gresham Smith supports several visa categories for engineering hires, including H-1B for specialty occupation roles, F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering disciplines, and J-1 for exchange visitors. For permanent residency, the firm has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions through the PERM labor certification process.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Gresham Smith?
You can browse and apply for Gresham Smith engineering openings directly through their careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Applications typically require a resume, and roles in licensed engineering disciplines may request information about your PE status or degree equivalency early in the screening process.
What qualifications are expected for Engineering roles at Gresham Smith?
Most engineering positions require a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering. Roles involving public infrastructure or healthcare facilities often expect familiarity with sector-specific codes and standards. Candidates with experience in Revit, AutoCAD, or discipline-specific modeling software are competitive, and progress toward a Professional Engineer license strengthens both the application and the visa petition.
How do I manage timing if I'm on OPT and considering Gresham Smith sponsorship?
If you're on F-1 OPT with a STEM extension, you have up to three years of work authorization, which gives enough runway to go through the H-1B lottery more than once. You should confirm your OPT end date against the H-1B cap-subject filing window, which opens in March each year for an October 1 start. If your OPT expires before an H-1B is approved, you'd need to maintain valid status or arrange a cap-gap bridge.
