Align your credentials with faculty research agendas
University of Oregon hires Research Assistants around active faculty grants and lab priorities. Before applying, identify specific faculty whose published work matches your research background. Tailoring your CV to their methodology and subject area significantly strengthens your candidacy.
Confirm sponsorship eligibility before accepting offers
Not every Research Assistant position at UO is funded at the level required to meet H-1B prevailing wage thresholds. During offer negotiations, ask HR whether the role is classified as a sponsored position and whether the compensation structure satisfies DOL wage requirements for your occupation.
Understand OPT and CPT timing relative to hire dates
If you're transitioning from F-1 status, your OPT start date must align with UO's onboarding timeline. A gap between your authorized start date and actual employment can violate status. Coordinate with UO's International Student and Scholar Services office before finalizing your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter UO research roles by visa type
Research Assistant openings at UO are listed across multiple portals and vary widely in sponsorship eligibility. Use Migrate Mate to filter active University of Oregon postings by the visa types you qualify for, so you're only pursuing roles that match your immigration situation.
Target grant-funded positions for stronger sponsorship pathways
Research Assistant roles tied to federal grants, such as NSF or NIH-funded projects, typically have more stable funding and clearer H-1B sponsorship infrastructure than departmentally funded positions. Look for postings that reference specific grants or principal investigators with active external funding.
Build your EB-2 NIW case during your Research Assistant tenure
If your research has national importance or advances a specific field, your time at UO can generate the publication record and recommendation letters USCIS expects for an EB-2 National Interest Waiver self-petition. Start documenting impact metrics and securing faculty endorsements from your first year.

Find Research Assistant at University of Oregon JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Oregon sponsor H-1B visas for Research Assistants?
Yes, University of Oregon sponsors H-1B visas for Research Assistant roles when the position qualifies as a specialty occupation and the compensation meets DOL prevailing wage requirements. Sponsorship is more consistent for positions tied to active grant funding. UO's Visa and Immigration Services office manages the H-1B petition process through USCIS on behalf of the hiring department.
How do I apply for Research Assistant jobs at University of Oregon?
Applications are submitted through UO's official careers portal. Most Research Assistant postings require a CV, a cover letter, and academic writing samples or research statements. Some positions are filled directly through faculty lab networks, so reaching out to professors with relevant grant funding can open doors that aren't publicly posted. Migrate Mate also aggregates UO Research Assistant openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility.
Which visa types are commonly used for Research Assistant roles at University of Oregon?
H-1B is the most common work visa for Research Assistants transitioning from student status or applying from abroad. F-1 OPT and CPT are frequently used by current or recent international students. J-1 Exchange Visitor visas are also common for researchers affiliated with a home institution, and TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying research occupations.
What qualifications does University of Oregon typically expect for Research Assistant roles?
Most Research Assistant positions at UO require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with many lab-based or quantitative roles expecting graduate-level training. Familiarity with discipline-specific research methods, data tools, or laboratory techniques is standard. Positions supporting externally funded projects may also require demonstrated experience with data collection protocols, IRB compliance procedures, or scientific writing.
How do I time the H-1B sponsorship process if I'm already working at UO on OPT?
If UO files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your OPT expires, a timely filed petition extends your work authorization automatically while USCIS processes the case. H-1B employment cannot begin before October 1 of the fiscal year the cap applies to, so filing during the April lottery window is essential. STEM OPT extensions provide up to 24 additional months to bridge the gap if needed.
