All employees are expected to have strong communication skills. They should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with their teammates.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a Fiber Foreman on xAI's traveling data center build team, you will lead crews in the installation, testing, and commissioning of high-performance fiber optic infrastructure across multiple new and expanding data center sites. You'll bring strong leadership, technical expertise, and a safety-first mindset to fast-paced hyperscale construction projects. This role involves significant travel to support greenfield and expansion builds, ensuring reliable, high-speed network connectivity that powers xAI's AI training clusters. You will mentor technicians, drive execution excellence, and help deliver mission-critical infrastructure on aggressive timelines.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as crew leader for traveling fiber teams, managing daily work assignments, resource allocation, and execution based on Fiber Span sheets, site surveys, path planning, and cross-functional coordination.
- Lead and mentor a team of Fiber Technicians across multiple project sites, providing on-the-job training, technical guidance, and performance feedback.
- Oversee all phases of fiber optic installation projects from planning and mobilization through execution, testing, handover, and closeout at new data center builds.
- Ensure a safe, productive, high-quality, and compliant work environment in dynamic construction settings.
- Develop and monitor sensor indicators; conduct timely inspections and quality checks to prevent system issues.
- Troubleshoot, resolve, repair, and install complex fiber optics systems in both OSP and ISP environments.
- Lead fiber splicing (fusion and mechanical), termination, labeling, and certification activities.
- Examine, replace, and optimize faulty or aging fiber optic cables and infrastructure.
- Organize scheduled maintenance, testing routines, and documentation during build phases.
- Monitor signal strength, attenuation, and overall network performance; maintain detailed system records, as-built drawings, and designs.
- Coordinate closely with superintendents, project managers, other trades (electrical, mechanical, controls), and GC teams to align with overall data center construction schedules.
- Support site mobilization/demobilization, tool/equipment management, and knowledge transfer between projects.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of direct experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing in large-scale data center or critical infrastructure environments (Tier 3/4 or hyperscale preferred).
- 2+ years in a foreman, crew lead, or supervisory role leading fiber/cabling teams.
- Proven experience working on traveling or multi-site construction/build projects.
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of fiber optic best practices, OTDR/power meter testing, structured cabling, and safety protocols.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Certification in fiber optics and/or cable installation (e.g., FOA, BICSI, or equivalent).
- Extensive experience with fusion splicing, high-density fiber deployments, and hyperscale/AI/HPC data center environments.
- Technical knowledge of communication networks, different fiber types (single-mode, multi-mode, etc.), and associated systems.
- Background in data center greenfield construction or rapid deployment projects.
- Experience coordinating with general contractors and multi-trade teams in fast-paced builds.
- Proficiency with project documentation, digital tools, and quality assurance processes.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively (typically 50-75% or more, depending on project needs) to xAI data center construction sites across the US, with potential for extended stays at project locations.
- Ability to work in tight quarters, at elevated heights (up to 50 feet with proper safety gear), and in active construction environments.
- Ability to lift up to 35lbs unassisted and maintain physical dexterity for installation tasks.
- Comfortable working in high-noise environments and varying weather conditions.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as dictated by project schedules and deadlines.

Target roles that align with xAI's core AI research mission
xAI sponsors visas primarily for technical talent in AI, machine learning, and software engineering. Focus your application on roles that directly support model development or infrastructure, these are the positions most likely to come with sponsorship support.
Understand which visa types xAI has sponsored
xAI has sponsored H-1B, E-3, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas. If you're an Australian national, the E-3 pathway is worth highlighting, xAI has sponsored it before and it avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
Move quickly, xAI hires at a fast pace
As a fast-growing AI startup, xAI tends to hire urgently for specialized roles. Once you identify a relevant opening, apply promptly. Delays can mean the position fills before sponsorship conversations even begin.
Demonstrate deep technical expertise upfront
xAI competes for elite AI talent globally. Lead your application with specific technical contributions, published research, open-source work, or systems you've built. Generic software engineering credentials are unlikely to stand out in a field this competitive.
Use a platform that surfaces verified sponsors
Not every AI company will sponsor, and listings rarely say so upfront. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and focus your search on companies like xAI that have an active track record.
Prepare for sponsorship conversations early in the process
At a lean, fast-moving company like xAI, hiring decisions can move faster than at large tech firms. Know your visa status, timeline, and any OPT or grace period deadlines before your first interview so you can address sponsorship needs clearly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does xAI sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, xAI sponsors H-1B visas. It's the most common visa type in xAI's sponsorship history, typically used for specialized technical roles in AI research, machine learning, and software engineering. As a cap-subject employer, xAI would need to participate in the annual H-1B lottery for new petitions, so timing your application around the registration window each spring matters.
What other visa types does xAI sponsor besides H-1B?
Beyond H-1B, xAI has sponsored E-3 visas for Australian nationals, as well as F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas. The E-3 visa is particularly valuable for Australians since it has no lottery and can be processed relatively quickly. F-1 OPT sponsorship signals that xAI is open to hiring international students transitioning from university into full-time roles.
What types of roles at xAI are most likely to include visa sponsorship?
xAI's sponsorship activity is concentrated in highly technical roles, think AI researchers, machine learning engineers, software engineers working on model infrastructure, and related deep-tech positions. The company is building foundational AI systems, so roles that require specialized knowledge in large language models, distributed systems, or advanced mathematics are most likely to come with sponsorship support.
How do I find visa-sponsored job openings at xAI?
Migrate Mate is the most reliable way to find xAI's open roles filtered by sponsorship eligibility. Because sponsorship status is rarely listed on job postings, using a platform built around verified sponsorship data saves significant time. Check xAI's own careers page alongside Migrate Mate to catch newly posted roles early, since xAI moves quickly and competitive positions can close fast.
What should I know about xAI's hiring timeline if I need visa sponsorship?
xAI operates as a fast-moving startup, which means hiring timelines can be compressed compared to larger tech companies. If you're on F-1 OPT or approaching the end of a grace period, communicate your timeline clearly and early in the interview process. For H-1B, factor in the lottery registration window in March, if you miss it, you'd need to wait a year or explore cap-exempt alternatives.
