Construction Inspector Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction inspector in New York?
Most construction inspector positions in New York require either a degree in civil engineering, architecture, or construction management, or several years of hands-on trades experience. New York City specifically requires inspectors working under the Department of Buildings to hold a Special Inspection Agency approval or a licensed professional credential. State agency roles often require passing a civil service exam through the New York State Department of Civil Service, which administers competitive titles like Construction Inspector I and II.
Which companies hire construction inspectors in New York?
Employers hiring construction inspectors in New York right now include LaBella Associates, Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists & Land Surveyors, D.P.C., and Mace, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's volume of publicly funded infrastructure projects means city and state agencies, along with large engineering consultancies, consistently post among the most openings.
Which New York cities have the most construction inspector jobs?
The cities with the most construction inspector openings in New York are New York, Rochester, and Albany. New York City drives the largest share of demand given the scale of its public works, transit, and commercial development activity, while Buffalo and Albany reflect steady infrastructure investment tied to state agency projects and regional development initiatives.
Are there remote construction inspector jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 5% of construction inspector openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, since most inspection work requires physical presence on active job sites. The portions of the role most compatible with remote work include report writing, plan review, and permit documentation.
How can I get hired as a construction inspector in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is sitting for a New York State civil service exam for an entry-level Construction Inspector title, which allows candidates with a qualifying degree to compete without prior inspection experience. Large employers such as the New York City Department of Design and Construction and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority run associate and provisional programs that hire from adjacent roles like construction laborer, estimating assistant, or engineering technician. A credentials edge comes from completing an OSHA 30-hour course and obtaining an ICC certification in a specialty such as building or plumbing inspection.
Where can I find and apply to construction inspector jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to construction inspector jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
