You become a corporate legal counsel in Washington by earning a Juris Doctor, passing the Uniform Bar Exam, and gaining admission to the Washington State Bar through the Washington State Bar Association. Washington accepts UBE scores transferred from other jurisdictions, which makes lateral moves common. Most in-house roles also expect several years of prior experience in corporate law, contracts, or a relevant specialty before hiring candidates directly into a counsel seat.
How much do corporate legal counsels make in Washington?
Corporate legal counsels in Washington earn a median of about $154,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $94,260 for the lowest 10% to over $298,210 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire corporate legal counsels in Washington?
Employers hiring corporate legal counsels in Washington right now include Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Washington's concentration of technology headquarters, aerospace primes, and growing life sciences companies means in-house legal teams here are among the largest and most active in the Pacific Northwest.
Which Washington cities have the most corporate legal counsel jobs?
Seattle and Bellevue hold the most corporate legal counsel openings in Washington. Seattle dominates because it is home to the headquarters and regional offices of major technology and aerospace employers whose in-house legal teams drive consistent demand, while Bellevue and Redmond reflect the overflow of large tech campuses that have expanded east of Lake Washington and maintain their own substantial legal functions.
How can I get hired as a corporate legal counsel in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a summer associate or post-graduate fellowship at a Seattle-area law firm followed by a lateral move in-house, since Washington's large technology employers like Microsoft and Amazon frequently hire from local BigLaw and mid-size firms. Many also run structured legal operations associate programs designed for new admittees. Gaining admission to the Washington State Bar early and developing a specialty in contracts, privacy, or intellectual property gives candidates a competitive edge for those first in-house roles.
