- Coordinates aspects of genetic consultations for individuals and families.
- Provides triage for referrals, incoming calls, and inpatient consults.
- Obtains and evaluates individual, pregnancy, medical, and family histories to determine genetic risk for genetic or medical conditions in a patient, their offspring, and other family members.
- Discusses the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management for genetic or medical conditions with patients and families.
- Identifies and coordinates genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies for the genetic assessment.
- Explains the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests or other diagnostic testing.
- Integrates genetic laboratory results and other diagnostic studies with the personal and family histories to assess and communicate risk factors for genetic or medical conditions.
- Evaluates a patient’s or family’s response to the genetic information reviewed and provide counseling.
- Provides written documentation of phone calls and office notes in the electronic medical record and for families.
- Participates in the teaching of residents, medical students, and other students. Participates in the supervision of genetic counseling students.
- Assists with data entry and maintenance of the department database.
- Participates in ongoing research activities of the program and the development of department protocols.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling or the equivalent in education and experience required.
- Excellent communication skills required.
