Counselor Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a counselor job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's densest hiring pockets: the Texas Medical Center corridor, HISD and the surrounding independent school districts, and the network of community mental health centers funded through Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. Candidates with licensure-track hours, bilingual Spanish skills, or experience in trauma-informed care tend to move faster in Houston's market, where demand for those specialties consistently outpaces supply.
Which companies hire counselors in Houston?
Houston counselor roles are posted by YMCA of Greater Houston, YES Prep Public Schools, and UTHealth Houston and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's mix of large hospital networks, independent school districts, Veterans Affairs facilities, and nonprofit behavioral health agencies means the employer pool is broad and spread across the metro.
Are there remote counselor jobs in Houston?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on specialty, since direct client-facing roles like school counselors or residential treatment staff are almost always on-site. About 50% of counselor openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with telehealth behavioral health and employee assistance program roles being the most consistently remote-friendly in the local market.
How can I get a counselor job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is a practicum or internship placement through the Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD or one of the city's large nonprofit providers, which regularly convert interns to paid staff. Entry-level case manager and mental health technician roles at Houston-area hospital systems and residential facilities also serve as common stepping stones, and bilingual candidates have a clear advantage in communities west and southwest of downtown.
Which industries hire the most counselors in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most counselors in Houston are Education and Healthcare & Medical Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's size as a regional medical hub, its large public school system, and its concentration of petrochemical and energy employers with employee assistance programs all drive sustained local demand across those sectors.
