Get Access To All JobsApplication Security Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Application Security Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is an integral part of your academic program. Your DSO will evaluate whether duties like penetration testing, secure code review, and vulnerability assessment map to your enrolled coursework. Roles that require only general IT support or network administration without a security specialization may not meet the integral-part standard your school requires.
Can I do CPT part-time while completing security engineering coursework?
Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week during an enrolled semester, doesn't count against your 12-month full-time CPT limit, which affects OPT eligibility. Many F-1 students in security programs structure their CPT as part-time during the academic year and full-time over summer to preserve full OPT access after graduation. Confirm the specific hours cap with your DSO.
What documentation does a CPT employer need from me as an Application Security Engineer?
The employer typically needs your current I-20 with CPT authorization endorsed on page two, confirming the employer name, start date, and whether authorization is part-time or full-time. Some employers, particularly those handling government contracts or sensitive systems, may also request SEVIS confirmation and proof of full-time enrollment. Provide both proactively to avoid onboarding delays.
How do I find Application Security Engineer employers that understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies with Labor Condition Application filing history for security engineering roles. Employers who have filed LCAs before are already familiar with work authorization processes and are less likely to withdraw offers when they learn you're on CPT. Smaller startups often have less experience navigating authorization requirements, so vetting employer familiarity early saves time.
Does CPT experience as an Application Security Engineer strengthen an H-1B petition later?
Directly, yes. CPT experience in a specialty occupation demonstrates that you've performed the duties of an Application Security Engineer in a U.S. work environment, which supports the specialty occupation analysis in a future H-1B visa petition. Employers who sponsored your CPT and understand the role's degree requirements are often better positioned to draft a strong Labor Condition Application and I-129 later.
