Get Access To All JobsBusiness Development CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Development job qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role connects directly to your degree program and your DSO approves it. Business development roles in strategy, market research, or sales operations typically align with business, marketing, or economics degrees. Your job offer must describe duties your curriculum covers, and your school determines whether the connection is strong enough to authorize CPT on your I-20.
Can I do CPT part-time in a Business Development role while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT allows up to 20 hours per week during an active semester and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility as long as you stay under that threshold. Full-time CPT during the academic year counts against your OPT, so coordinate with your DSO before accepting a full-time business development internship while enrolled.
How do I find Business Development employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you search business development roles filtered by employers with active DOL filing history, which signals familiarity with international student work authorization. Targeting companies that have already navigated the LCA and H-1B visa process reduces the time you spend educating HR about CPT logistics during the offer stage.
What documents do I need before starting a CPT Business Development job?
You need an updated I-20 with CPT authorization listed on page two, showing the employer name, start and end dates, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT, but they may request your I-20 and passport for their I-9 records. Don't start work before the CPT start date on your I-20.
Will a Business Development CPT role count toward future H-1B sponsorship?
CPT experience doesn't directly support an H-1B petition, but it builds your professional record and relationship with an employer who may later sponsor you. For H-1B eligibility, the business development role must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it requires a bachelor's degree in a specific related field. Confirm the position's degree requirement with the employer before accepting to avoid a mismatch later.
