Does a Business Development Associate role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your school's DSO confirms the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum. Business development tasks like market research, lead generation, and client strategy align with business, marketing, and management degree programs. Your I-20 must be updated with CPT authorization before your first day, and the role must appear as part-time or full-time CPT depending on your program structure.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Business Development Associate without affecting my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so the timing matters. If you're completing a short-term internship of under 12 months, your OPT remains intact. Part-time CPT carries no OPT restrictions regardless of duration. Confirm the total authorized CPT hours with your DSO before accepting any full-time offer.
What documents does an employer need from me to start CPT?
Your employer needs a copy of your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization for their specific company, your start date, and whether it's part-time or full-time. Some employers also request your F-1 visa stamp and I-94 record for their I-9 file. Have these ready before your offer letter is signed, since your DSO needs the offer details to issue the updated I-20 first.
How do I find Business Development Associate jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with a track record of hiring F-1 students in business development roles. Firms in SaaS, management consulting, and tech services tend to have structured internship programs with HR teams familiar with I-20 documentation. Targeting companies that have hired international students before reduces the back-and-forth over CPT authorization requirements.
Is there a cap on how many CPT authorizations I can have during my program?
There's no federal cap on the number of separate CPT authorizations, but your total full-time CPT cannot reach 12 months without losing OPT eligibility. You can hold multiple sequential part-time CPT authorizations across different employers as long as each is separately authorized by your DSO and tied to your curriculum. USCIS doesn't directly oversee CPT, so your school's policy governs the specifics.
