Does a new business development role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to your degree program's curriculum. Roles focused on market research, client acquisition, strategic planning, or partnership development typically qualify under business, management, or entrepreneurship programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your coursework maps to the specific job duties listed in your offer letter.
Can I do CPT at a startup or early-stage company for a business development role?
Yes. CPT authorization doesn't require the employer to have prior international hiring experience or be enrolled in E-Verify. Startups and early-stage companies offering new business development roles qualify as long as the work is integral to your curriculum. Confirm the employer can provide a formal offer letter listing your duties, start date, and supervisor before your DSO processes the authorization.
Will full-time CPT in a business development role affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more makes you ineligible for OPT, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) doesn't count toward that limit regardless of how long you use it. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT months carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time role.
How do I find business development employers who are open to hiring CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for new business development roles filtered by employers with verified DOL filing history. These employers have already navigated international hiring paperwork, making them more likely to understand CPT authorization requirements. Many business development teams at mid-size companies specifically recruit F-1 students for their multilingual skills and international market knowledge.
What job duties in a business development role are acceptable for CPT versus those that aren't?
Duties like market analysis, lead generation strategy, competitive research, partnership outreach, and go-to-market planning are strong CPT candidates under business or management programs. Purely administrative tasks, general customer service, or duties with no connection to your degree field won't satisfy the integral-to-curriculum requirement. Review the O*NET occupation profile for business development roles to understand which duties align with standard educational competencies before submitting your CPT request.
