Get Access To All JobsCommercial Account Executive CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Commercial Account Executive role qualify for CPT?
It qualifies if your degree program includes coursework in sales, business development, account management, or a related discipline, and your DSO confirms the job duties connect to those curricular goals. Programs in business, marketing, and management information systems commonly support this alignment. The role itself doesn't automatically qualify, the curricular connection has to be documented and approved by your school.
Can I do CPT for a Commercial Account Executive role that includes commission-only compensation?
CPT authorization doesn't require a minimum wage, but your school may have policies about unpaid or commission-only arrangements. More practically, commission-only structures can complicate Form I-9 and payroll verification at the onboarding stage. Confirm with your DSO whether your program allows commission-only CPT and ask the employer how they handle W-2 reporting for variable-pay roles before accepting.
How do I find Commercial Account Executive roles where employers understand CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces Commercial Account Executive positions from employers with documented work authorization experience. Filtering for employers who have previously sponsored or hired international students narrows the field to companies whose HR and legal teams already understand the CPT authorization process, which shortens the time between offer and your DSO approval.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the employer changes my territory or responsibilities?
CPT is authorized for a specific role and employer as described in your I-20 update. If your territory changes significantly or your duties shift from account management to an unrelated function, your DSO may need to issue a new or amended CPT authorization. Notify your DSO promptly if the scope of work changes materially, rather than waiting until your next check-in.
Does CPT for a Commercial Account Executive role affect my H-1B eligibility later?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but the type and duration matter downstream. Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility, which removes the standard pathway to H-1B sponsorship through OPT cap-gap. If you're planning to pursue an H-1B eventually, structure your CPT as part-time where possible, or limit full-time CPT to fewer than 12 cumulative months across your program.
