Growth CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Growth role qualify for CPT work authorization?

Growth roles qualify for CPT when the work is an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO approves the authorization. Positions focused on user acquisition analysis, retention experimentation, or marketing analytics typically map well to business, marketing, or data science programs. Bring the job description to your DSO and reference the O*NET occupation profile to confirm alignment with your major before accepting an offer.

Can I do full-time CPT for a Growth internship without affecting my OPT?

Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so the timing matters. If your Growth internship runs a full academic year at full-time hours, you'll lose post-completion OPT. Part-time CPT, or full-time CPT under 12 months, has no impact on OPT. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and confirm the count with your DSO.

How do I find Growth employers who understand CPT?

Employers with prior experience sponsoring international workers on DOL-certified LCAs are typically more comfortable with CPT onboarding. Search Migrate Mate to identify companies with active filing history in marketing and analytics occupations. These employers have documented processes for I-9 verification and are less likely to mishandle your CPT authorization paperwork at the offer stage.

What happens if my Growth role responsibilities change after CPT is authorized?

CPT is authorized for a specific employer, job description, and set of dates. If your responsibilities shift significantly, such as moving from analytics to paid media management or product experimentation, you need to notify your DSO. A new CPT authorization may be required. Working outside your authorized job scope can put your F-1 status at risk, so document any changes in writing with your employer.

Can I work remotely in a different state on CPT for a Growth role?

Remote work complicates CPT because your authorization is tied to a specific employer and position, but USCIS and your school's policies on work location can vary. Some DSOs require the work location listed on your I-20 to match where you're physically working. If your Growth role is fully remote and your physical location differs from the employer's listed address, confirm the arrangement in writing with your DSO before your start date.
