Does a Director of People role qualify as a specialty occupation for CPT purposes?
CPT doesn't require specialty occupation status the way H-1B visa does, but your DSO must confirm the role is an integral part of your curriculum. Director of People positions typically require graduate-level knowledge in organizational behavior, HR strategy, or business administration, which aligns well with MBA and HR management programs that support CPT.
Can I do CPT as a Director of People if I'm only part-time enrolled?
Part-time CPT is allowed under F-1 regulations, but you must remain enrolled at least part-time to maintain valid F-1 status. Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, used for 12 months or more eliminates your eligibility for OPT, so coordinate carefully with your DSO before accepting a full-time Director of People offer.
How do I find employers who will structure a Director of People offer for CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Director of People and people operations roles filtered by employers with documented sponsorship history. Employers who have previously navigated F-1 work authorization are far more likely to issue the offer letter your DSO needs and to understand the CPT authorization timeline without requiring you to educate their HR team from scratch.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the employer changes my start date?
CPT is tied to the specific dates your DSO authorized. If your employer pushes your start date forward or backward, you must return to your DSO and request an amended I-20 with the corrected dates before you begin working. Starting before or after your authorized CPT window, even by a few days, puts your F-1 status at risk.
Will full-time CPT as a Director of People affect my ability to file for H-1B after graduation?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more makes you ineligible for OPT, which is typically the bridge between F-1 graduation and H-1B status. If you're planning to file for H-1B after graduation, structure your Director of People CPT as part-time where possible, or limit full-time CPT to under 12 cumulative months across all employers.
