Get Access To All JobsFactory Worker CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a factory worker job qualify for CPT as an F-1 student?
It depends on your specific program. CPT requires the job to be an integral part of your curriculum, not just related to your major. If you're studying industrial engineering, manufacturing technology, or supply chain management, a factory worker role can qualify. Your DSO will review the job description and determine whether it meets the curricular connection requirement before authorizing CPT on your I-20.
How do I find factory employers who are already familiar with hiring F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented work authorization filing history, so you can prioritize manufacturers who have navigated F-1 employment before. You can also ask plant HR directly whether they've onboarded CPT students previously, since familiarity with the I-20 authorization process significantly reduces administrative delays when your start date is approaching.
Can I do part-time CPT as a factory worker while taking classes?
Yes, part-time CPT is authorized for 20 hours or fewer per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility after graduation. Full-time CPT, which is more than 20 hours per week, used for 12 months or more does eliminate your OPT eligibility entirely. Factory shift structures vary, so confirm your scheduled hours with the employer and disclose them to your DSO before your I-20 is updated.
What documents do I need before starting a CPT factory worker position?
You need a DSO-authorized I-20 with the CPT employer name, job start date, and work location listed before your first day. You'll also need a government-issued ID and your Social Security Number for the employer's I-9 and E-Verify process. Starting work even one day before your CPT authorization date on your I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation, so timing the offer letter and DSO processing carefully matters.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the factory changes my work location?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer and worksite listed on your I-20. If the factory reassigns you to a different facility, even within the same company, your DSO needs to issue an updated I-20 reflecting the new location before you work there. Notify your DSO immediately when any job details change and request a revised authorization rather than assuming the original I-20 covers the new site.
