Get Access To All JobsFinance And Accounting CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a finance internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school's curriculum includes a required or elective practicum component and the internship duties directly relate to your degree program. A role involving financial statement analysis, variance reporting, or budgeting support at a bank, corporate treasury, or accounting firm typically satisfies that connection. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description to your authorization meeting.
Can I do CPT at a startup or small accounting firm, not just large corporations?
CPT authorization isn't tied to employer size. Any employer that issues a legitimate offer letter and completes Form I-9 correctly can host a CPT student. Smaller firms and boutique CPA practices are common CPT sponsors in accounting. Confirm they can provide the supervision and structured work experience your DSO requires for curriculum credit.
How do I find finance and accounting employers open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate filters employer listings by work authorization history, so you can identify companies that have previously hired international students. Pair that with OFLC Wage Search to verify employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for accounting and finance roles, which signals they're already set up for work-authorized hires.
Will full-time CPT in a finance role affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT (20 or more hours per week) eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely under USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not count against OPT. If your finance program allows optional rather than required CPT, you have more flexibility to structure hours below the full-time threshold.
What should my offer letter include for CPT authorization in an accounting role?
Your DSO needs the employer's legal name, business address, your specific job title, the exact start and end dates, and your weekly work hours. For finance and accounting roles, including a brief duties description referencing tasks like financial analysis, reconciliation, or audit support helps your DSO confirm the curriculum connection and speeds up I-20 authorization.
