Does an investment banking internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the internship duties directly relate to your enrolled program of study and your school confirms the role is an integral part of your curriculum. Your DSO will require an offer letter describing finance-specific responsibilities such as financial modeling, pitch book preparation, or due diligence work. Generic business internship language typically isn't sufficient for authorization.
Can I do a full-time summer analyst program on CPT?
You can, but full-time CPT used for 12 months or more makes you ineligible for OPT. Most F-1 students in investment banking use full-time CPT only for one summer to preserve OPT eligibility. If you're planning a second summer program, discuss the cumulative timing with your DSO before accepting an offer.
What documents does an investment bank typically need from an F-1 CPT student?
Employers need your current I-20 showing CPT authorization with the correct employer name, start date, and end date. They'll also need your F-1 visa stamp and I-94 arrival record. Some banks also request a copy of your enrollment verification. Your HR contact can confirm their specific checklist, but the CPT-authorized I-20 is non-negotiable.
How do I find investment banks that already understand F-1 CPT documentation?
Migrate Mate lets you browse investment banking roles filtered by employers with documented work authorization history, so you can target firms whose HR teams have handled F-1 students before. This reduces the back-and-forth over documentation requirements and speeds up the onboarding process significantly.
Does CPT for an investment banking role affect my future H-1B sponsorship path?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but it sets the stage for it. Investment banks that sponsor H-1B visas typically file through the annual lottery in March for an October start date. Using OPT after graduation gives you a bridge period. If your employer is already familiar with LCA filings and USCIS processes, the transition from CPT to OPT to H-1B visa sponsorship is more predictable.
