What You'll Accomplish
Own the Design System
- Lead the vision, strategy, and roadmap for Hinge Health’s design system.
- Define and evolve core components, patterns, tokens, and interaction standards used across the product.
- Ensure the system supports a wide range of surfaces, from core product UI to Agent flows, enterprise templates, and integrated design systems.

- Influence code-level decisions that affect system consistency and adoption.
- Help shape tooling, Storybook usage, and contribution workflows so the system is easy to use and maintain.
Set Standards & Governance
- Partner with feature teams through office hours and design reviews. You will help teams navigate patterns the system doesn't yet cover and decide when a design should become a global standard or remain a local solution.
- Establish clear contribution models, review processes, and decision-making frameworks for system changes.
- Act as a design system “domain owner,” providing guidance and sign-off on system-level decisions.
- Document principles, patterns, and rationale so decisions scale beyond individuals.
Raise the Bar for Design Quality
- Identify inconsistencies, duplication, and fragmentation across the product and drive systematic improvements.
- Balance speed with craft, knowing when to be opinionated and when to enable flexibility.
- Advocate for system-level thinking across product, design, and engineering.
Basic Qualifications
- 8+ years of product design experience, with deep ownership of a design system at scale.
- A standout portfolio showcasing high-impact design systems work and leadership across complex systems initiatives.
- Highly effective communicator with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and align teams around design direction.
- Demonstrated success mentoring designers and elevating the quality of team output.
- Deep fluency with tokens, component architecture, variants, and Figma systems craft.
- Experience with Claude Code (or other agentic coding tools), MCPs, and other AI workflows.
- Strong opinions on system governance, contribution models, and adoption strategies.
- Experience partnering with platform engineers on implementation, parity, and release cadence.

Get Access To All JobsLead Designer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Lead Designer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes courses in UX, visual communication, design management, or a related field. Your DSO must determine that the Lead Designer position is an integral part of your curriculum, not just tangentially related. Bring the job description and a course map to your DSO appointment so they can make a clear curricular connection.
Can I do CPT as a Lead Designer if the role involves managing other designers?
Management duties don't disqualify a CPT placement, but they can complicate the curricular alignment review. If your program includes design leadership, project management, or studio direction coursework, those duties strengthen your case. If your authorized CPT description only covers individual contributor work, ask your DSO to update it before you start directing others.
How do I find Lead Designer employers who are set up to handle CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers with verified Labor Condition Application filing history for design roles. Employers who've sponsored design positions before already understand the LCA and CPT authorization timeline, which reduces the back-and-forth that slows down offers with less experienced hiring teams.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the Lead Designer role changes scope mid-internship?
If your responsibilities shift significantly, such as moving from a defined design-lead role to a broader product or operations function, your DSO needs to review and potentially reauthorize your CPT. Don't wait until the end of the semester. Report scope changes to your DSO as soon as they occur, and get updated authorization in writing before continuing work.
Does 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. USCIS rules state that completing one year or more of full-time CPT eliminates your eligibility for OPT entirely. Lead Designer internships often run full-time, so track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully across all authorizations. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against your OPT eligibility regardless of duration.
