INTRODUCTION
Seeking a Gynecologic Oncologist to Practice High Quality, Innovative Medicine at a Community Cancer Subspecialty Center with Academic Post. The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the West Michigan Cancer Center Radiation and Surgical Specialties is recruiting a full time Gynecologic Oncologist to join our team. WMCC is a multispecialty group that houses 5 Radiation Oncologists, 2 Gynecologic Oncologists, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon, 2 Surgical Oncologists and 5 midlevel providers. This position is to replace one of the 2 Gynecologic Oncologists who is departing October 2025.
ABOUT THE JOB
WMCC is owned by the 2 large community hospitals in Kalamazoo, Bronson Methodist Hospital and Beacon Health Hospital where the surgeons in our group provide surgery and inpatient care. They are located each within a 5 minute drive of WMCC. WMCC has a strong partnership with Western Michigan University School of Medicine Ob/GYN Residency program, with teaching and resident mentorship at the forefront of our service. There is a 4th year resident on service at all times and 2nd year residents rotate half the year as well. The GYN Oncologists have a faculty position at the medical school. Our GYN Oncologists have access to 4 DaVinci Xi systems and block time, a state of the art private anesthesia group allowing a largely outpatient robotic practice, hospitalist partnerships for admitting patients, and experienced PA support in clinic. The Radiation Oncology group at WMCC provides innovative curative and palliative radiation to our patients including in house HDR for locally advanced cervical cancer, SBRT, and IMRT. The GYN Oncology group manages chemotherapy at the 1 (one) of the hospital-based infusion rooms which are on-site at each hospital, and works closely with Medical Oncology to assist with chemotherapy management at the other. Surgery-only practice is also an option with chemotherapy management by the two hospital based Medical Oncology groups. WMCC is part of the NCORP involving the west side of Michigan to be able to provide our patients with access to clinical trials. We host a multidisciplinary tumor board conference with community and resident involvement. The catchment area of WMCC is the 9 county southwest corner of the state. We see a broad and intellectually interesting variety of pathology, as we serve both suburban and rural communities. Call is shared between the midlevel’s and physicians with 1 in 4 weeks call, at times providing weekday backup call for the midlevel providers.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is full time, with 1.0 clinical and teaching/administrative. Weekly schedules include 2 days in clinic, 2.5 days in surgery, and 0.5 days for admin and teaching. Kalamazoo is a small city of about 75,000 people, a college town with opportunities to find any social niche you may be interested in. We are a 2 hour drive from Chicago and Detroit, and 45 minute drive from beautiful Lake Michigan. Kalamazoo houses Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. It is the headquarters of Stryker and Pfizer which have stimulated the local economy immensely. WMCC is a practice focused on patient-centered, high quality care, a positive work environment, and work-life balance. We are busy, but have the administrative support to be efficient and allow for high quality of life for our team members. Whether you are new in the field looking for mentorship, or already have experience and are looking for a comfortable position, this may be the job for you.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have completed an ABOG-approved Ob/GYN residency and GYN Oncology fellowship.
COMPENSATION
Salary will be competitive, based on private practice scales with consideration of experience.
Medical Oncologist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a medical oncologist CPT role need to be at an accredited hospital or cancer center?
Not necessarily, but the placement site must be able to provide work that directly fulfills a requirement in your degree curriculum. In practice, most oncology CPT placements occur at ACGME-accredited institutions or NCI-designated cancer centers because those sites have the infrastructure to document the academic connection your DSO requires for authorization.
Can I do CPT as a medical oncologist if my degree program is in biomedical sciences rather than medicine?
Yes, if the oncology work is an integral, curriculum-required component of your biomedical sciences program. Research-focused placements, such as translational oncology lab work or clinical trial coordination roles, are more common in this case than direct patient care positions, which typically require a medical license your program may not support.
How do I find oncology employers who are already familiar with CPT authorization?
Search Migrate Mate for medical oncologist roles at institutions with documented DOL filing history. Academic medical centers and NCI-designated cancer centers tend to have dedicated international hiring coordinators who understand CPT timelines and can move quickly on DSO authorization paperwork without needing extensive explanation of the process.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the oncology rotation site changes mid-program?
Your existing CPT authorization becomes invalid the moment the employer or work location changes. Your DSO must issue a new I-20 with updated CPT authorization before you begin working at the new site. Any gap between sites where you work without updated authorization puts your F-1 status at risk, so coordinate the transition paperwork before your last day at the original location.
Does full-time CPT as a medical oncologist affect my eligibility for OPT later?
Yes. Under USCIS rules, 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, meaning under 20 hours per week, does not count against OPT regardless of duration. If your oncology placement requires full-time clinical hours, you need to plan your post-graduation work authorization strategy before accepting the role, not after.
