Does orthopedic PT work qualify as CPT for an F-1 student?
Yes, as long as the position is directly tied to your physical therapy curriculum and your school authorizes it. Most accredited DPT programs include clinical internship requirements that map directly to outpatient orthopedic and musculoskeletal PT roles. Your DSO reviews the job description to confirm the academic link before endorsing your I-20.
Can I do full-time CPT as an orthopedic PT student without affecting my OPT?
You can, but 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, meaning under 20 hours per week, doesn't count against OPT regardless of duration. Most DPT clinical rotations are structured as full-time blocks, so track your total full-time CPT months carefully if you plan to use OPT after graduation.
How do I find orthopedic PT employers who are comfortable hiring CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented authorization experience so you're not starting from scratch with HR departments unfamiliar with F-1 work authorization. Outpatient orthopedic practices and sports medicine clinics that have hired international students before are your strongest targets since they already have E-Verify enrollment and CPT onboarding processes in place.
What documents does my orthopedic PT employer need from me for CPT?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsement showing their specific name and your start and end dates, your F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. You'll complete an I-9 using these documents. Some employers also request your SEVIS ID or enrollment verification letter from your school's registrar.
Can I work at multiple orthopedic PT sites under one CPT authorization?
No. CPT authorization is issued per employer and per location. If your clinical rotation involves two different clinic sites, even within the same practice network, each site requires its own CPT authorization on your I-20. Contact your DSO before rotating to a second location, even temporarily, to avoid unauthorized employment under your F-1 status.
