Does a Partner Executive role qualify for CPT authorization?
It can, but your DSO evaluates whether the specific duties, such as managing co-sell relationships, developing channel strategies, or driving partner pipeline, are an integral part of your curriculum. A generic business development title isn't sufficient. You'll need your offer letter to reflect tasks directly tied to your program's learning objectives, and your academic advisor may need to co-sign the CPT request.
Can I do CPT as a Partner Executive at a startup with no prior F-1 hiring history?
Yes, but expect more friction. Startups without prior F-1 employees often lack I-9 and E-Verify familiarity, and some haven't yet enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for your employment verification. Build in two to three weeks for the employer to get set up before your intended start date. Your DSO can provide the employer a CPT authorization letter explaining their obligations under USCIS regulations.
How do I find Partner Executive internships that explicitly support CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with documented F-1 and CPT hiring history in partnership and business development roles, which narrows your list to companies that already understand the authorization process. Beyond that, look for roles posted as internships or co-ops under partnership, alliances, or channel teams, those structures are more commonly tied to academic program requirements than full-time converted roles.
What happens if my CPT authorization end date falls before the project ends?
You must stop working on the exact end date printed on your I-20. Working even one day beyond your authorized CPT period violates F-1 status. If the project extends, your DSO can issue a new CPT authorization for the updated period, but they need a revised offer letter or employer extension confirmation before approving it. Don't assume the authorization auto-renews.
Does the Partner Executive role need to be directly related to my specific major?
USCIS requires CPT to be an integral part of an established curriculum, which your school interprets. Business administration, management, and MBA programs commonly approve Partner Executive placements because the role draws directly on coursework in strategy, sales, and organizational behavior. Engineering or computer science majors pursuing the same role may face additional scrutiny unless the partner function is technically focused, such as solutions engineering partnerships.
