Get Access To All JobsProcurement Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Procurement Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in supply chain management, operations, business administration, or contract management. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific duties of the role, such as vendor sourcing, purchase order processing, or spend analysis, connect to your enrolled curriculum. A role with a title match but unrelated duties may still be denied, so the job description matters as much as the title.
Can I do part-time CPT as a Procurement Specialist while finishing classes?
Yes. CPT can be authorized part-time, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, while you're enrolled. This is common for procurement internships that run alongside a full course load. Part-time CPT doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Only full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility, so tracking your cumulative authorized hours matters.
How do I find employers who are familiar with hiring CPT students for procurement roles?
Migrate Mate lets you filter by employers with documented work-authorization hiring history, which helps you prioritize companies already comfortable with CPT onboarding. Procurement roles are common in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare systems, and federal contracting, and larger employers in these sectors typically have HR processes set up to handle I-20 documentation without delays.
What documents does my employer need from me to onboard me on CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the authorized employer name, role, and date range, along with your passport and any prior visas for Form I-9 completion. Some employers also request your visa stamp. Your I-20 must already reflect the CPT authorization before your first day of work. Starting before authorization is issued is a status violation, so confirm your DSO has processed the update.
Does CPT for a Procurement Specialist role affect my future H-1B eligibility?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but it does affect OPT. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Since OPT is often the bridge to H-1B sponsorship, it's worth structuring CPT as part-time or keeping total full-time CPT under 12 months if post-graduation work authorization is part of your plan.
