CPT Project Designer Jobs
Project Designer roles in architecture, industrial design, and UX often qualify for CPT when the work directly applies concepts from your degree program. Your DSO must authorize each CPT position before you start, and the role must integrate with your coursework, not just overlap with your field of study.

Get Access To All JobsProject Designer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Project Designer jobs qualify for CPT?
Project Designer roles can qualify for CPT when the work is integral to your degree program, not merely related to your field. A graphic design student working on brand identity projects, or an architecture student on spatial design, typically qualifies. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how directly the role supports your enrolled coursework, so the job description matters as much as the title.
Can I work as a Project Designer part-time on CPT while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, lets you work while remaining enrolled full-time. Most DSOs prefer this structure since it preserves your full-time student status and keeps your OPT eligibility intact. If you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose access to OPT entirely, so tracking your authorized hours across semesters is critical.
How do I find Project Designer employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Project Designer openings by employers with a documented history of hiring F-1 students. Targeting employers already familiar with CPT authorization reduces back-and-forth and avoids offers that stall because the employer has never navigated the process before, which is a common friction point for design roles at smaller studios.
What happens if my CPT end date falls before the design project finishes?
You cannot continue working once your CPT authorization expires, even if the project is ongoing. You'd need your DSO to extend your CPT for the following semester, which requires the role to remain academically relevant and you to remain enrolled. Negotiate phased project deliverables with the employer upfront so your contributions can wrap cleanly within each authorized period.
Does CPT work experience as a Project Designer count toward H-1B specialty occupation requirements later?
CPT work experience in a qualifying design role can support a future H-1B petition by demonstrating progressive experience in a specialty occupation. USCIS evaluates the totality of your credentials, including work history, when adjudicating specialty occupation claims. Document your CPT roles thoroughly, including project scope, tools used, and your degree-level contributions, since that record becomes part of your H-1B evidence package.
