CPT Sales Representative Jobs
Sales Representative roles on CPT give F-1 students hands-on client-facing experience that must be tied directly to a business, marketing, or communications curriculum. Your DSO authorizes each CPT position individually, so every employer change or hour increase requires a new I-20 before you start work.

Get Access To All JobsSales Representative CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Sales Representative job qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role connects directly to your enrolled curriculum. Sales Representative positions are most defensible for students in business, marketing, communications, or management programs. Your DSO will evaluate whether the job duties, such as client outreach, pipeline management, or territory analysis, integrate with a specific course or program requirement. Roles that are purely commission-based with no structured training component can be harder to justify.
Can I work for multiple employers or switch sales jobs while on CPT?
You can't switch employers or add a second employer without getting a new CPT authorization from your DSO. Each employer requires a separate I-20 amendment showing that specific company's name, address, and your start date. If you leave a sales job and join a new company, you must stop working at the old employer before the new CPT is issued, since the authorization is employer-specific.
How do I find Sales Representative employers who are comfortable hiring F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with a track record of hiring international students on work authorization. Sales organizations vary widely in their familiarity with CPT. Mid-size companies in SaaS, wholesale distribution, and financial services tend to have HR infrastructure that handles I-9 and E-Verify processes. Smaller direct-sales operations often aren't E-Verify enrolled, which creates compliance gaps you'll want to avoid.
Does commission-only sales work count toward CPT, and can it affect my OPT later?
Commission-only arrangements can qualify as CPT if the position is otherwise structured and your school accepts them, but many DSOs require evidence of a base wage to confirm the role meets employment standards. More critically, full-time CPT authorization lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, regardless of pay structure. Confirm your weekly hours classification with your DSO in writing before starting any full-time sales role.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my sales employer relocates my position to a different state?
A location change requires a new CPT authorization because your I-20 lists the specific work site. Your DSO must amend your I-20 before you begin working at the new address. Working at an unauthorized location, even temporarily, puts your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO as soon as you receive notice of a relocation and don't report to the new site until your updated I-20 is issued.
