Summer 2027 Arborist Trainee Internship with Davey Tree Expert Company
The Davey Tree Expert Company is looking for exceptional students who are interested in expanding their field experience in the areas of Tree Care, Plant Health Care, Sales and Client Services.
STARTING DATE:
Flexible - We are currently seeking internship candidates for Summer 2027. This is a temporary, full-time position ideal for college students on summer break who want to gain hands-on experience in the field.
Rate of pay: $22.00 hourly
JOB DUTIES
What You’ll Do:
- Learn to climb trees! (Yes, we will pay you to do that.)
- Operate as a member of a tree crew while progressively learning new skills
- Learn to perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients. Including but not limited to:
- Tree identification and industry pruning guidelines
- Prune, thin, and remove deadwood throughout the tree canopy
- Learn how to install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems
- Assist in removal of hazardous trees
- Properly maintain, prepare and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, and more.
- How high you grow depends on you!
QUALIFICATIONS
What We’re Looking For:
- Love of the outdoors
- Preferred: Background in Forestry, Horticulture, Landscaping, or working at heights
- Ability to complete the Davey Tree Trimmer Orientation Program upon hire
- Ability to complete the Davey Tree First Aid, CPR and defensive driving course upon hire
- Preferred: Relevant pesticide and related licenses and certificates, if required by state law

Does a Sales Trainee role qualify as an integral part of my curriculum for CPT?
It qualifies if your program of study includes coursework in sales, marketing, business development, or a related field and the job duties directly reinforce those learning objectives. Rotational training programs, territory management assignments, and CRM-based prospecting work are the strongest fits. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific degree program and enrolled course, not the job title alone.
Can I start a Sales Trainee job before my DSO updates my I-20?
No. CPT authorization must appear on your I-20 before your first day of work. Starting before your I-20 is updated puts you out of status, which can affect your entire F-1 record including future OPT eligibility. Submit your CPT request with the employer letter as early as possible, since most DSO offices need several business days to process updates.
How do I find Sales Trainee employers who are familiar with CPT authorization?
Search for Sales Trainee openings on Migrate Mate, where you can identify employers with a history of hiring international students. Companies that have sponsored F-1 students before are less likely to withdraw offers when they see CPT on your authorization documents. Mid-size consumer goods distributors, insurance agencies with training pipelines, and wholesale companies frequently run structured trainee programs suited to CPT timelines.
Does working as a Sales Trainee on CPT count toward the 12-month OPT limit?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many months you accumulate. Full-time CPT of 20 hours or more per week does count, and reaching 12 cumulative months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Track your authorized hours precisely with your DSO if your trainee role involves variable schedules or transitions from part-time to full-time.
What if my Sales Trainee program extends beyond one semester?
CPT authorization is issued per academic term, so a multi-semester placement requires a separate DSO approval for each term. Your employer letter must reflect the dates for each renewal period, and your I-20 must be updated before each new term begins. Some year-long rotational sales programs split the authorization across fall and spring semesters specifically to stay within per-term CPT rules, so confirm the structure with your DSO when you accept the offer.
