Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno Counseling Services is recruiting for a full-time, 40-hour per week Post-Master’s Clinical Social Work Intern. Under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, the Clinical Social Work Intern (CSW-Intern) will provide a full range of mental health services to university students. The Clinical Social Work Intern will receive a comprehensive training experience in university counseling services, including individual and group psychotherapy, same-day sessions, crisis interventions, outreach, and consultation services to university students.
The majority of this work is accomplished via one-to-one clinical contact with students, but consultation and/or outreach services may be extended to faculty, campus organizations, and other professional members of the community. Careful attention is paid to opportunities to ensure sufficient clinical hours are available, so the CSW-Intern can meet the LCSW requirements set forth by the State of Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers. Clinical Social Work Interns receive a minimum of 60 minutes of individual supervision per week and have access to didactic training seminars.
The start date is August 1, 2026, and the position will continue for three years, or the applicable end date, dependent on the candidate’s board registration as an intern.
Required Qualifications
- Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a Graduate School of Social Work program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) or equivalent accrediting body.
- Applicants must pass the appropriate examination given by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) and must be licensed at the LMSW level in Nevada by the start of the internship.
- Candidates must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must not currently hold an LCSW license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidates having experience working in a clinical setting with university student or emerging adult populations are encouraged to apply.
- The preferred candidate would have experience providing counseling services to underserved populations and should have interest in serving members from diverse groups.
Compensation Grade-Letter of Appointment
$50,000 with a salary increase for the second year, third year, and after LCSW licensure is obtained.

Does my social work CPT placement need to be at a licensed agency?
Your school sets the field placement requirements, not USCIS. Most accredited MSW and BSW programs require placements at agencies with a licensed field supervisor on staff, since that supervision satisfies CSWE accreditation standards. Check your program's field education manual for the exact credentialing requirements your employer must meet before your DSO will sign off on CPT authorization.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice instead of a nonprofit or government agency?
Yes, if the placement meets your program's curriculum integration standard and your school approves the site. Private practices must designate a licensed supervisor, and your DSO will want documentation showing the role connects directly to your coursework. Some schools restrict CPT to accredited field sites only, so confirm your program's policy before pursuing a private practice placement.
How do I find social work employers who are comfortable with CPT paperwork?
Use Migrate Mate to search for social services employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for social worker occupations. Employers with LCA history are already familiar with work authorization documentation and are less likely to withdraw offers when they see your I-20 CPT endorsement. Your school's field placement office also maintains a list of pre-vetted agencies.
Does CPT social work experience count toward state LCSW licensure requirements?
It depends on your state's licensing board. Some states count supervised hours completed during an accredited field placement toward post-degree supervised hour requirements, while others require all licensure hours to be completed after graduation. Contact your state's social work licensing board directly before your placement begins so you can structure your supervision agreement accordingly.
What happens if my CPT placement is with a school district or county government that processes hiring slowly?
Government agencies often have HR timelines that don't align with academic semester start dates. Request your offer letter and supervision agreement as early as possible, since your DSO needs those documents to authorize CPT before your placement begins. Starting work even one day before your I-20 CPT start date is unauthorized employment, so build extra lead time into your offer negotiation.
