Get Access To All JobsProject Management Coordinator CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Coordinator role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program includes coursework in project planning, operations management, or business administration, and the job duties directly apply those skills. Your DSO will review the offer letter and your curriculum to confirm the connection. Roles involving scheduling, resource coordination, and stakeholder communication typically satisfy the integral-to-curriculum requirement when your degree covers those areas.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Project Management Coordinator without affecting OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, has no effect on OPT. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your CPT hours carefully and confirm your cumulative count with your DSO before accepting any full-time CPT offer.
What documents does my employer need to provide to support my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs to provide a formal offer letter that includes your job title, start and end dates, work location, and a description of duties specific enough for your DSO to confirm the academic connection. Some schools also require a training plan or learning agreement signed by a supervisor. Vague offer letters that list only "project management support" without task detail are frequently returned by DSOs for revision.
How do I find Project Management Coordinator roles where employers understand CPT work authorization?
Search on Migrate Mate and filter by employers with LCA filing history in project management or operations roles. Employers who have previously filed LCAs have worked through DOL's wage certification and compliance process, which means they're generally more comfortable navigating F-1 work authorization requirements than employers encountering it for the first time.
Does CPT experience as a Project Management Coordinator count toward H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
CPT employment is lawful work authorization and counts as professional experience for purposes of an H-1B visa petition. To qualify as a specialty occupation, the role must require a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum entry requirement. Project Management Coordinator positions typically qualify when the duties include planning, budgeting, or cross-functional coordination, and when the employer's internal job architecture requires a relevant degree for the role.
