Critical Care Physician Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a critical care physician in Missouri?
You must hold a full and unrestricted medical license from the Missouri State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts, which requires graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of an ACGME-accredited residency, and passing USMLE Step examinations. After residency, you complete a critical care fellowship, then apply for board certification through ABIM or ABS. Missouri also requires a separate controlled substance registration to prescribe scheduled medications in the state.
How much do critical care physicians make in Missouri?
Critical care physicians in Missouri earn a median of about $227,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,070 for the lowest 10% to over $435,150 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire critical care physicians in Missouri?
Employers hiring critical care physicians in Missouri right now include SSM Health, Mercy, and 77 Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Missouri's dominant health systems, anchored in the Kansas City and St. Louis metros, account for the largest share of active intensivist openings in the state.
Which Missouri cities have the most critical care physician jobs?
St. Louis, Columbia, and St Louis have the most critical care physician openings in Missouri. St. Louis leads because of its concentration of Level I trauma centers and academic medical centers affiliated with Washington University and Saint Louis University, while Kansas City's volume is driven by large regional systems including Saint Luke's and the University of Kansas Health System, which draws patients from across the western half of the state.
Are there remote critical care physician jobs in Missouri?
Yes, but they're rare. Critical care medicine is an inherently hands-on specialty requiring direct bedside assessment, procedures, and real-time team coordination, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 0% of critical care physician openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve tele-ICU coverage or administrative and utilization review responsibilities rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a critical care physician in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to fellowship-to-employment pipeline programs at Missouri's major academic systems, where BJC HealthCare and Saint Luke's regularly recruit graduating fellows into first-attending intensivist roles. Candidates who complete their ACGME fellowship in Missouri have a clear advantage because they already hold Missouri licensure and established relationships with department leadership. Physicians transitioning from hospitalist or pulmonology roles can also apply for hybrid positions that blend floor coverage with ICU duties while building critical care volume.
Where can I find and apply to critical care physician jobs in Missouri?
You can find and apply to critical care physician jobs in Missouri on Migrate Mate, which lists current Missouri openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find the roles that match your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
