Critical Care Physician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a critical care physician in New York?
To become a critical care physician in New York, you must obtain an active medical license through the New York State Education Department, which oversees physician licensure in the state. The path includes completing medical school, a primary residency in internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, or a related field, and then a fellowship in critical care medicine accredited by the ACGME. New York requires physicians to register their license biennially and complete continuing medical education as a condition of renewal.
How much do critical care physicians make in New York?
Critical care physicians in New York earn a median of about $242,500 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $86,250 for the lowest 10% to over $414,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire critical care physicians in New York?
Employers hiring critical care physicians in New York right now include Physician Affiliate Group of New York, P.C. (PAGNY), PHYSICIAN AFFILIATE GROUP OF NEW YORK, and NYU Langone Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers drive consistent year-round demand, particularly for intensivists with fellowship training and board certification.
Which New York cities have the most critical care physician jobs?
Bronx, New York, and Buffalo have the most critical care physician openings in New York. New York City leads because of the sheer concentration of Level I trauma centers, academic medical centers, and large hospital networks in the metro, while Buffalo and Albany anchor strong regional demand through major systems like Kaleida Health and Albany Medical Center that serve broad upstate and rural catchment areas.
Are there remote critical care physician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are rare. Critical care medicine is an inherently hands-on specialty requiring direct patient management at the bedside, so fully remote positions are not typical. About 0% of critical care physician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to involve tele-ICU coverage, telemedicine consultation, or administrative and medical director responsibilities rather than direct bedside care.
How can I get hired as a critical care physician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a critical care fellowship at a New York institution and applying for attending positions before graduation, as large systems like Northwell Health and NewYork-Presbyterian regularly recruit graduating fellows into their ICU programs. Physicians coming from adjacent roles such as hospitalist or emergency medicine positions can pursue lateral moves by gaining ICU exposure during residency and applying to institutions that offer structured onboarding for early-career intensivists. Obtaining New York State licensure and board eligibility before your fellowship ends gives candidates a meaningful competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to critical care physician jobs in New York?
