Duties & Responsibilities:
The VCU School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking a Senior Administrator, Data Analytics & Systems Specialist. This position will report to the Associate Dean for Finance and will lead the technical development, data management, and analytical infrastructure necessary to support the School of Medicine (SOM) Teaching and Research (T&R) Faculty Compensation Plan.
In addition, the role will also oversee School of Medicine effort related to the Clinical Compensation plan. The specialist will be responsible for ensuring data integrity, advanced compensation analytics, and financial modeling to support faculty compensation planning, productivity tracking, and institutional decision-making.
Working closely with the SOM Finance Office, Technology Office, Faculty Affairs, and Research Administration, the role provides the quantitative and systems foundation for compensation governance, including compensation benchmarking, productivity metrics, forecasting models, and executive reporting.
Key responsibilities include:
Analytics and Database Development:
- Develop, maintain, and enhance databases, analytic tools, and reporting systems that support administration of the SOM T&R Compensation Plan.
- Integrate multiple institutional data sources into centralized analytic platforms with robust reporting and dashboard capabilities in collaboration with the SOM Technology Office.
- Design and maintain data models and analytic frameworks that support compensation planning and institutional decision-making.
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across compensation and productivity datasets.
Compensation Analytics and Modeling:
- Conduct advanced compensation analytics to support faculty salary planning and institutional financial management, including:
- Faculty productivity metrics
- Compensation benchmarking
- Internal salary equity analysis
- Budget impact modeling
- Develop and maintain compensation forecasting models evaluating:
- Faculty salary growth
- Incentive and bonus payments
- Departmental financial sustainability
- Implement methodologies for incorporating measurable parameters into annual salary modeling and compensation illustrations, in collaboration with SOM Finance.
- Analyze compensation trends across:
- Academic rank
- Departments and divisions
- Faculty tracks
- Market benchmarks
- Translate complex compensation data into clear, actionable insights for school leadership.
Faculty Productivity and Effort Tracking:
- Create and manage databases and quantitative metrics to track faculty productivity and effort across teaching, research, service, and administration.
- Maintain and enhance institutional tools such as:
- Teaching Effort Estimation Tool
- Service Effort Estimation Tool
- Collaborate with SOM Research Administration to validate faculty research effort and grant activity.
- Design and manage productivity indicators including:
- Grant funding and indirect cost recovery
- Publications and scholarly output
- Teaching contributions and educational leadership
- Academic and institutional service roles
- Evaluate how productivity measures influence compensation outcomes and incentive eligibility.
Business Management of the T&R Compensation Plan:
- Support the financial operations and annual administrative cycle of the Teaching & Research Compensation Plan.
- Coordinate with SOM Finance and academic departments on:
- Annual compensation planning
- Budget alignment
- Incentive and bonus pool allocation
- Monitor compensation program performance and compliance with plan rules and governance policies.
- Support the annual compensation review and approval process by providing data analysis and reporting.
- Develop and refine business processes and analytical workflows to improve the efficiency and transparency of compensation administration.
Market Benchmarking and External Data Analysis:
- In collaboration with the SOM Finance team, conduct regular analyses of national faculty compensation datasets including the Association of American Medical Colleges Faculty Salary Survey and relevant benchmarks from the Medical Group Management Association.
- Produce market competitiveness analyses to support:
- Recruitment offers
- Faculty retention reviews
- Salary adjustment requests
- Prepare reports summarizing market positioning by specialty, department, and academic rank.
Reporting and Compensation Decision Support:
- Develop and maintain dashboards and reporting tools for school leadership, department chairs, and faculty affairs.
- Generate regular reports on faculty compensation, productivity metrics, and incentive eligibility.
- Produce quarterly research award and bonus eligibility reports in collaboration with SOM Research Administration based on federal funding metrics.
- Translate complex analytical findings into clear reports and presentations for executive leadership.
Administrative Role and Compensation Data Management:
- Establish and maintain a database of approved administrative faculty roles, including associated effort allocation, funding sources, and current incumbents.
- Support institutional oversight of administrative stipends and role-based compensation components.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Business, Finance, Health Administration, or a related field
- Advanced data analysis, modeling, and interpretation skills
- Strong proficiency with: Excel (advanced modeling); database tools and HRIS systems; data visualization and reporting tools
- Significant experience developing analytic or database tools supporting compensation, finance, or workforce analytics, preferably within an academic medical center environment
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex data into business insights supporting strategic decision-making
- Analytical Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in auditing large datasets for compliance and identifying the "root cause" of data discrepancies across disparate systems.
- IT Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work with complex data sets, reporting tools, and analytics platforms. Experience collaborating with IT and data teams to define system requirements and ensure successful implementation.
- Communication: Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Data Analytics, Business Administration, Finance, Health Administration, or related field
- Experience working in academic medicine, higher education, or faculty affairs
- Experience with faculty compensation analytics, productivity metrics, or benchmarking datasets
- Familiarity with academic medical center financial and research administration data systems

Salary Range: Up to $120,000; commensurate with experience
