Data Science Director Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a data science director job in New York?
Focus your search on New York's densest hiring clusters: financial services firms in Midtown, media and advertising companies in the Flatiron District, and health systems anchored in Kips Bay and the Upper East Side. Candidates who combine deep ML or statistical modeling expertise with demonstrated P&L or team leadership stand out here. Networking through New York-based data science meetups and alumni networks at local universities also opens doors that cold applications rarely do.
Which companies hire data science directors in New York?
New York data science director roles are posted by Capital One, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and Citi and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's employer mix is unusually broad, drawing from global banks, insurance carriers, digital media giants, retail conglomerates, and fast-growing fintech and healthtech startups all competing for the same senior talent.
Are there remote data science director jobs in New York?
Yes, though director-level roles often require meaningful on-site presence for stakeholder alignment and team leadership. About 74% of data science director openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with the remote share skewing toward companies headquartered outside the city that still list New York as a preferred location. Strategic and advisory responsibilities tend to be the most location-flexible parts of the role.
How can I get a data science director job in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is building toward director-level work through senior or lead data scientist roles at mid-size New York firms, where scope expands faster than at large institutions. Startups in the Flatiron and Chelsea tech corridors and growth-stage fintechs frequently promote analytical talent into leadership earlier than Wall Street firms do. Building a portfolio of cross-functional projects, presenting at local data conferences, and contributing to open-source work visible to New York hiring managers all accelerate the transition.
Which industries hire the most data science directors in New York?
New York data science director roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Media & Entertainment, and Banking & Financial Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's position as the global center of finance, a major media hub, and a rapidly growing life sciences corridor means demand for senior data leadership cuts across sectors in ways you won't find in most other cities.
