Chief Executive Officer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chief executive officer in New York?
Reaching the chief executive officer level in New York typically requires a combination of an advanced degree, such as an MBA from a recognized program, and a sustained progression through senior leadership roles in finance, operations, or a sector-specific discipline. New York does not impose a state license on the CEO title itself, but heavily regulated industries, such as banking, insurance, and healthcare, require leaders to hold or oversee individuals with relevant New York state credentials before assuming top executive authority.
How much do chief executive officers make in New York?
Chief executive officers in New York earn a median of about $257,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $140,410 for the lowest 10% to over $657,630 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire chief executive officers in New York?
Employers hiring chief executive officers in New York right now include City of New York, M&s, and Aon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of Fortune 500 headquarters, private equity portfolio companies, and major nonprofit institutions means CEO-level openings surface across a wide range of industries throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most chief executive officer jobs?
The cities with the most chief executive officer openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Buffalo. New York City dominates because of its unmatched concentration of corporate headquarters, financial institutions, and media and technology companies, while secondary markets such as White Plains and Albany generate openings through regional healthcare systems, state-affiliated organizations, and mid-market businesses that anchor those local economies.
Are there remote chief executive officer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are rare. About 11% of chief executive officer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects how deeply board relationships, investor meetings, and organizational culture responsibilities anchor most CEO roles to a physical presence. The portions of the role most likely to be conducted remotely are strategic planning, external stakeholder communications, and advisory or interim engagements.
How can I get hired as a chief executive officer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a general manager or divisional president role at a mid-size New York company or nonprofit, where full P&L responsibility is accessible earlier than at a large corporation. New York's robust nonprofit sector, including hospital systems such as Northwell Health and academic medical centers, regularly promotes operationally strong internal candidates into top leadership. Building board exposure through advisory roles with New York-based business associations or community development organizations also accelerates the path.
Where can I find and apply to chief executive officer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to chief executive officer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and sector, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
