Driver Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a driver in New York?
The path depends on the type of driving work you want. For commercial roles, you obtain a CDL through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles by passing a knowledge exam, skills test, and medical evaluation. For for-hire vehicle work in New York City, the Taxi and Limousine Commission issues a license requiring a background check and defensive driving course. Entry-level delivery roles typically require only a valid New York State driver's license and a clean driving record.
Which companies hire drivers in New York?
Employers hiring drivers in New York right now include Sun River Health, Riverview, LLP, and Hudson River Trading, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense urban core and extensive freight corridors mean large carriers, transit agencies, and delivery networks all maintain consistent headcount.
Which New York cities have the most driver jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Riverhead have the most driver openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its massive logistics, transit, and for-hire vehicle industries, while Buffalo's manufacturing base and distribution centers drive steady freight demand, and Albany's role as a government and healthcare hub supports a range of passenger and delivery positions.
Are there remote driver jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 3% of driver openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most driving work requires physical presence behind the wheel. The small share of remote opportunities typically involves dispatch coordination, fleet management, or driver-training roles rather than active vehicle operation.
How can I get hired as a driver in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying for a local delivery associate or courier role, which large New York employers like UPS and Amazon Logistics regularly fill without requiring prior commercial experience. Completing a New York State DMV-approved driver training program strengthens any application, and obtaining a CDL learner's permit signals commitment to employers who offer paid CDL training for new hires. Starting in a warehouse or dock position at a freight or logistics company is a common lateral move that leads to driving roles within months.
Where can I find and apply to driver jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to driver jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your license class and experience, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
