Driver Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a driver in California?
The path depends on the type of driving work you want. For commercial driving, you apply through the California Department of Motor Vehicles for a Commercial Driver's License, which requires passing a knowledge exam, a skills test, and a physical medical evaluation. For rideshare or delivery work, no CDL is required, but you must hold a valid California Class C license. School bus drivers must also complete a California-specific background check and specialized training through their employer.
Which companies hire drivers in California?
Employers hiring drivers in California right now include AutoZone, AHMC Healthcare, and Lithia & Driveway, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and volume of e-commerce activity, agriculture freight, and large population centers means ongoing driver demand from logistics giants, regional carriers, and public transit agencies statewide.
Which California cities have the most driver jobs?
Riverside, Los Angeles, and Pico Rivera are the California cities with the most driver openings. Los Angeles dominates because of its port activity, enormous consumer base, and major distribution infrastructure, while the Bay Area and Sacramento draw demand from tech-sector last-mile delivery, regional grocery chains, and state government fleet operations respectively.
Are there remote driver jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Driving work is almost entirely on-site and vehicle-based, so remote arrangements don't apply to most roles. About 5% of driver openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects the small share of adjacent roles such as dispatching, fleet coordination, or driver recruiting that can be performed off-site.
How can I get hired as a driver in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying directly to last-mile delivery roles with companies like Amazon Logistics or UPS, both of which regularly hire candidates with no prior commercial experience and provide on-the-job training in California. School districts and regional transit agencies such as Sacramento Regional Transit also run new-hire training programs for bus drivers. Obtaining a basic California CDL Class B before applying gives candidates a meaningful edge and opens doors to city transit and shuttle positions that require only a probationary period before independent routes.
Where can I find and apply to driver jobs in California?
You can find and apply to driver jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your license class, location, and schedule, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
